Alright, I know everyone is annoyed by those dang one uppers- BUT I love explaining language as "one upping" because I think sometimes it just 'clicks' for parents! The idea here is to add one thing to what your child says- not as a question or as a demand ("say big tower!")- but more as a conversational comment. This works great for children of all ages who speak in single words AND those who speak in complete sentences. This is how children learn most vocabulary/concepts - via life experiences and exposure! • Prior to her bath that night, I had shown her the new PJs and introduced her to the concept of a mermaid. I said “It’s a girl who is also a fishie and she lives under water! It’s called a mermaid!” • After the bath, I made a big deal about her new PJs again. In this conversation she recalls the part of the concept she’s most familiar with - a fish - she couldn’t quite remember the term “mermaid” yet. She had only hear it once. • So I, in a natural way, exposed her to the term and concept again, for a second time! • Did you know it takes children multiple exposures to a word or concept to retain it? Did you know it takes extra exposure and effort for kiddos with language delays to learn new words? • Either way, on a daily basis you are teaching your children or students new words and concepts! You are introducing them to the world. You are opening their mind. You are raising and shaping the future! Big day for our girl today! After her second spell of pneumonia in 4 months, we were referred to a pulmonologist whom we saw for the first time today. Based on her exam and the information I gave her, the doctor determined that Rosy is asthmatic and prescribed her Flovent. Our second appointment was with orthotics! Rosy’s custom Surestep SMOs fit her perfectly and will help her with walking while relieving the stress of weight on her ankles, knees, and hips! I can already see the difference as she cruises around on the furniture at home! I am so excited for our special little lady. She made everyone in the offices smile today! Teaching is hard. Teaching while pregnant, ECSE & finishing grad school is harder. This year has taught me so much more about myself, not only as a teacher, but as a person, than I thought possible. I was so blessed with amazing paras and students that helped me along the way. I've had to prioritize and put things on back burners (this account included) that were hard for me to do, but valuable lessons learned.
