Baby shark This embryonic catshark is wriggling around it its egg case. Egg cases are attached to invertebrates or algae via long strands that coil around a solid base during the few months until hatching. The shark pup will eventually emerge from the case and start swimming immediately.

Whilst it takes a little under a minute, what we don’t realise is that to get here was countless appointments, injections, ultrasounds, an egg collection, semen sample and then the insemination . What a lot of people don’t realise is that it is all of the before steps that impacts this 1 minute of time putting the sperm inside the egg . Proper diagnosis is needed. Good stimulation is required. Successful egg collection. Mature eggs. Sperm prepared and found. These all play a part in all of the minutes putting them together to create the embryo. Blastocyst Biopsy . The above embryo was biopsied today to test for the BRCA1 gene. Not all pgs testing is done for sex selection or for aneuploidy screening. For some patients we have to genetically screen the embryo for specific diagnoses. This is called PGD or Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis . The procedure is the same in our lab. We pull the trophectoderm cells out from the zona, use the lazer to break the joins between the cells and biopsy a few cells off. These will then be sent to the genetics lab for testing . We try to zap the embryo with the lazer as little as possible so we do not harm the embryo too much. The idea is to try and get the cells to come apart with minimal damage. Over use of the lazer can burn too many cells on the outside and reduces the survival of the embryo . The trophectoderm always reminds me of crocodile or snakes scales in the pattern they make. It amazes me that we can take a few of these cells and the embryo repairs so quickly. It truly is a marvel the human embryo . Enjoy your friday .
