Okay, this particular #TransformationTuesday is hard for me, given how relatively recent the photo on the left is . . Something that I think worth sharing with cis people is how my sense of self has changed with time, and what this means for my womanhood today. . . Honestly, I have a difficult time accepting that the photo on the left was once “me.” That person’s mindset, appearance, emotions, body, passions, and even taste preferences and pastimes are completely different. . . Even given that, I’ve still maintained the same sense of self throughout transition. There was never any sudden “line” that I crossed; it’s all been a seamless blend. I’ve always stayed “myself”, and that’s why I think acknowledging my transness visibly in a public sphere is important to me. I won’t ever forget where I came from—even if it can hurt to remember. . . I think this seemingly contradictory concept is why it can be such a jarring, dissociative experience to be misgendered or reminded of my dead name today . . When you deny a trans person their gender, you deny the reality of their lived experience in such a fundamental way that it just does not compute ❌ . . HRT—it’s a whirlwind of a ride. German for "middle pain", Mittelschmerz refers to a lower abdominal or pelvic pain occurring midway through the menstrual cycle, at times localized to the point that some women can actually tell which of the two ovaries supplied the egg that month. Note that Mittelschmerz is different than and totally off-cycle from menstrual cramping. Thought to occur from the trauma of ovarian wall rupture (something we can clearly see here), the pain is indeed benign and usually lasts no more than a few hours. . Happy #TransitionTuesday y’all! . As always, I’m so excited to see everyone’s progress in finding and loving themselves! Today I wanted to talk about clothes. . . I remember the first clothes I bought after coming out and how I felt wearing them. While it mostly felt “right” wearing more feminine shirts, pants, and dresses, I didn’t feel comfortable. It took so long to have the confidence to even walk out of my house. Slowly, the more I did it and started to change my wardrobe (and began to find my style), the more comfortable I felt wearing clothes I had only dreamed of wearing pre-transition. ☀️ . This all brings me to today. I kept a few of my old “guy” clothes and find myself wearing them pretty often (especially hoodies). While feminine clothes helped me feel more valid during my transition, I’m happy to say that I’ve reach a point where I feel valid regardless of what I’m wearing or how I look. . . My advice for anyone starting their journey: The first step is the hardest. One and Half Years since starting HRT! . There has been a plethora of unexpected experiences throughout this journey. Above all, I never expected to be a beacon of light to those struggling. ☀️ . . I’ve always considered myself to be an overwhelmingly positive person, but I never realized how contagious it could be. Over the last few months I’ve had so many individuals message me about how I inspired them to do (blank) or how a story or post I shared gave them courage to accept themselves, come out, or begin their journey. . It’s Tuesday, you know what that means! . . While I’m incredibly grateful for the progress and changes since the first photo, it also struck a chord with me. I wanted to use this week’s #transitiontuesday to talk about it. ⭐️ . Growing up, I played football and a few other sports to try to “fit in”. I liked that they were distractions but they always felt forced for me. Every time I was on the field, I couldn’t help but glance at the cheerleaders. Not out of lust, but jealousy. Jealousy towards knowing that I could never be one without damaging my social status and/or enabling others to question my sexual or gender identity (something I had not accepted myself at the time). . This brings me to this photo. On the left, I see a football player struggling to stick to the status quo. And on the right, a cheerleader that never was. While I am typically against dwelling on things we can’t change, the thought of this sent me down a rabbit hole of what could’ve been if I had been born in the right body or transitioned earlier in life. . Despite all of that, if given the choice, I wouldn’t go back to change any of it. It’s a huge bummer I missed out on some experiences, but I’m so incredibly grateful with who I’ve become. I’m not sure rewriting the playbook would bring me to where I am today. . . . Forcing a smile today, as I get the news that my insurance has denied the pre-authorization for my estrogen. . . My clinic will be appealing the denial, and has thankfully been able to give me one-time shots at cost, but honestly, I’m at a loss. . . I have already been using the same medication, with the same employer, under the same insurance. All that’s changed is the state that I’m living in (Minnesota), even though my insurance is based in California. . . This is a denial coming AFTER covering a significant portion of my bottom surgery, which is additional context for why this has me floored ‍♀️ . . I think the entire system of medicine in the U.S. is a mess, and that we need to shift to socialized, single-payer healthcare immediately. The red tape and bureaucracy surrounding access to medically necessary trans healthcare in particular is one example of how this system is broken, although I know trans people likely face similar barriers in other countries. . .
