Guatemala Day 3: Finally we got to visit the artisans! Today we traveled 20 mins by boat across Lake Atitlan to visit the workshops of Rosario & Cristobal. . Rosario and her brother Alvaro employ about 50 families (where multiple people per family are employed) but are now seeking to double the number of families to 100, based solely on Noonday’s orders alone. . Rosario is a powerhouse. She exudes a quiet yet strong confidence in a society where women face tremendous gender-based discrimination. She is making history along with 4 other women as the first ever women to run for city council. Rosario has goals to not only grow her business, but to improve her community by holding a political office. I am just in awe of her. . Cristobal’s workshop employs 125 artisans. He began learning the art of beadwork at age 12 and has expanded this craft throughout Santiago so much so that kids now learn this craft in school as a path to a good job. He has a heart of gold and says he will never turn away anyone who asks for a job. He will give everyone a chance. ❤️ . I have so much more to share about the impact Noonday is having, but for now suffice it to say the artisans are so grateful for the dignified jobs they have through Noonday. Your purchases make a profound difference in their lives. . It was such an honor to be welcomed into their homes and workshops, to see them at work, and to hear about their lives. We don’t often consider the very hands that stitch the seams of our garmets or that cut the cloth of our obsession with trend—precious lives at risk, for what? To fulfill our need for instant gratification? I first watched The True Cost a few years ago, an eye opening documentary depicting the crisis that is fast fashion. Since then, I avoid stepping into certain stores because the power of our purchase gives voice to who and what we choose to support. Because those hands have stories. Those hands have faces and names. They have families and friends. They have hopes and dreams and aspirations. Who are we to inhibit that, solely because of our privilege? I’m not saying I’m great at it, but the first step is awareness. It brings me great joy to partner with companies who are challenging the standards of our consumeristic culture.
