Jane Eyre is a Melbourne girl who became a winemaker in Burgundy - what a dream. Her wines are beautiful expressions of place and time so it’s not surprising she managed to carve out a place for herself in one of the most challenging regions in the world.⠀ ⠀ This is her 2017 Chenas Beaujolais. Chenas is one of the premium regions, called ‘Crus’ in Beaujolais in southern Burgundy. Made from the Gamay grape, these wines are similar in body and tannin to Pinot Noir and are exceptional value for money.⠀ ⠀ Vibrant purple in colour with aromas of Cherry blossom, raspberries and cranberries, black plum and a hint of blood orange zest. In the background there’s some slightly earthier notes of fresh rhubarb - I really could smell this wine all day.⠀ ⠀ On the palate it’s dry with a medium body and zippy mouthwatering acidity. There’s all those lovely red berries again with a savoury graphite-like minerality, some fennel seed spice and earthy muskyness.⠀ ⠀

The vineyards around Oppenheim are not influenced directly from the Rhine, here the heat stays and brings perfect ripe and harmonious grapes. In comparison to Nierstein where the red slate is dominant, in Oppenheim the soil is very chalky. Another gem from Oz. This 1994 Penfolds Reserve Bin 94A Chardonnay is fully mature and shining in complexity and richness. The nose was clean, showing sweet corn, cream, a touch of cloves, vanilla, and hazelnuts. Crisp acidity, medium(+) alcohol (13.5% abv), and a ton of now-integrated new French oak gave this wine a full body. On the palate the creaminess of MLF and apparent lees contact (batonnage?) offered a plump base for the intermingling of the last bits of primary white peach that is just about to disappear; winemaking was robust on this guy, but it cannot be called obtrusive. The concentration of flavor bears the oakiness extremely well, and the tendency towards caramel and praline on the palate and nose is the result of that wedding of secondary and tertiary. It stands up to the Yattarna in terms of quality, and is arguably the better buy. Petit retour sur ce #chateaulatour en millésime #2002. Un vin d’une puissance incroyable ! Malgré un passage en carafe de +- 2 heures le nectar était encore très fermé. Il mérite encore plusieurs années de vieillissement...D’une belle complexité, le vin développe un nez de sous-bois, de mûr et de pierres concassées. En bouche l’attaque est ample avec une finale très longue. +- 40 secondes. Je me réjouis déjà de revenir sur ce millésime Latour d’ici 10-15 ans.
