Ok so here is my END OF PIYO pose. i was flexible BUT I have never been this flexible & I wish you could understand how big of deal this is for me. I have scoliosis & had rods fused to my spine when I was 11 years old. This right here proves to me that I can do things I thought I couldn't do!

I’ve spent the week recovering from fever-inducing back pain. Pain that rendered me useless for an entire weekend and disrupted my already fragile sleep cycle. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ My fused spine and other life things can make my practice ugly, inconsistent and short. It’s not insta-worthy most of the time, but tbh WHO GIVES A SHIT THAT’S NOT THE POINT. It took me a long time to get here.. 23 years down the road and I am finally at the edge of the beginning of loving myself, accepting my body as a temple, and gaining confidence in all that I lack and behold at the same time. Day seven of #novemberasanas is wheel pose. I came to yoga because of backpain. I was thrilled when I found relief in asanas and so excited when I got my splits in a matter of months. Wheel pose is a much slower journey. I am gently easing my body into backbends because I've spent the past ten years avoiding twists and bends that could hurt my fused spine. There are a lot of tense muscles and even more anxieties huddled around my spine, but I'm working daily on opening up and seeing what my body is really capable of. If you asked me at fourteen to do this pose, I would have sworn it was impossible with all the charm of teenage angst. Exactly eleven years ago today, 14-year-old me underwent a life-changing, body-altering spinal fusion surgery. I’ve spent years trying to figure out how to live with this new body of mine, and I can honestly say I’m finally starting to feel at home in it. Okay, so our little trip wasn’t JUST for fun. We did have a couple stops to make on the way back. I had to take a trip to my TMJ specialist, get some fillings, and see my neurosurgeon for imaging to check on how my bone is fusing. We got a lot of good news, and a little bad news. My fillings went well and my bone is fusing wonderfully (Thank God)! But there is still a lot of damage to my jaw from intubation, my wisdom teeth need to come out sooner than later, and It looks like there is an issue with pressure in my brain which will likely require some intense meds, a monitor being bolted into my skull, and a spinal tap to get more information (and to determine if I will need surgery). But we are choosing to focus on the GOOD news over the BAD. This unfortunately is just the nature of EDS.
