I’m jumping into the #gettoknowahomesteader challenge a bit late but whatever, it looks fun! First post is introductions: . I hate selfies but I love this pic. It’s when I was 9 months pregnant scything our entire yard. Homesteading has pushed me to do things I didn’t think I could do and I love the power that I show in this pic. Women’s bodies are amazing. I’ve been growing food for about 13 yrs. I’m dedicated to organic, permaculture practices that are in harmony with nature. I love traveling abroad and it’s had a huge impact on who I am. We’ve already taken our kids on one worldschooling adventure and will be leaving in October for another (Europe for 3 months, Costa Rica for 4). Figuring out how to be travelers and homesteaders is HARD. I’m an activist, anti-racist, and a feminist and I take “be the change you wish to see” very seriously. Integrity is everything. We have a Free Food Stand in the summer. We unschool our kids. I met my husband at a Nonviolent Communication retreat, we got married in Yosemite at Strawberry Music Festival. I feel uncomfortable with the title of homesteader because we don’t preserve EVERYthing, we are urbanites, and don’t fit the classic image, but we’re also more than “gardeners” so...? I run a free community compost program at our house that has 30 families participating. In another life I’d be a dancer in a hip hop troupe, or salsa dancer. I’ve struggled with depression since I was a kid (#mentalhealthwarrior) and a tree saved my life when I was suicidal. Yes, a tree, she spoke to me. Nature heals. I’m now studying to become a horticultural therapist. I have #adenomyosis which is increasingly painful and a big challenge when it comes to the physicality of homesteading. I’m a vegetarian pacifist. I love summer music festivals; listening to live music, dancing my ass off with my kids, hangin with friends, it’s the best. Nursing our dead land back to healthy abundance has been one of my greatest joys and accomplishments. I hope to make gardening more accessible for others with this account. Yesterday was my 34th birthday Two days after I was born, a family came to the hospital to take me home. I didn’t know them, and they didn’t know me, but that was the start of our lives together. They raised me with love and care, giving me everything I needed and treated me like their own and I’m so grateful for everything they’ve done If they didn’t adopt me, who knows how my life would’ve been. This is partially what led to the manifestation of @wildheart.nc ✨ My desire to nurture, rescue, and provide sanctuary to others only grows stronger each year. So, this is it. This is 34. Well guess what? I’m a duck mamma!!!! I am so excited about these little things. I literally teared up when holding them today for the first time. They are SO fluffy! They’re #muscovyducks and I’m so excited to see what they’ll grow up to be, but I’ll be hanging out and snuggling with them as much as possible while they’re little and still like being held lol We don’t know if they’re boys or girls yet, but the females we will keep for laying eggs, we will keep one male for reproduction and the other males will be for meat. I am so excited for duck fat!! @marcelpreston worked So hard today to get their brooder all set up, I’ll post more about it in my stories tomorrow, and we will be working on their duck house this week. Dairy goat starter kit!! We are needing to downsize our herd. We are offering our registered Nigerian Dwarf in milk and her 3 kids all together. Cowgirl, the doe, is 8 years old and makes beautiful kids. She delivers unassisted and has been a fantastic mom and has a very easy going personality. Her milk production is the largest among our herd but she isn’t show quality and our children show for 4H. I wish I had the space for all of them but I don’t. She had 3 healthy kids, 2 does and 1 buck born on April 6th, 2019. They have been disbudded. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to get started immediately with dairy goats. To me, this photo perfectly embodies what the month of April is like on the mountain: piles of fresh eggs, multiplied by the warm lengthening of days and the ever present cartloads of firewood still needed to chase away the evening chill from inside our little cabin. Yes, the hens are laying with the wild abandon of a flock unencumbered and unbothered by the rough ministrations of a virile young cock. Each day the nesting boxes are piled high with a rainbow of eggs that seem to glow in the dark gloom of the dusty coop. Unfortunately the wood pile is not piled high and has been rapidly dwindling the further we progress into the new year. Thankfully, today was our first real warm day of 2019 and for the first time all season we didn’t light a fire in the hearth. Tonight, with the windows cracked to let in the tangy scent of springtime, I hear the song of the frog folk instead of the cracking of a hot, hardwood fire. And that, more than any other omen, warms my heart with the knowledge that spring has finally, truly come to call.
