No one except one person, knows how hard I have worked to be able to do all of the wonderful things my body can do. I still do Yoga. I still lift weights. I still run up and down stairs and guess what? I feel amazing doing it all. If something was hurting me, I wouldn’t do it. I’m doing the most amazing of all of the things I’ve ever done and I am so excited to give birth to this awesome little human being. Baby already loves his parents so much. It’s so funny. He/she won’t move for anyone else but mommy and daddy. I’ve been on this health journey since 2013 and I don’t plan on stopping even after giving birth. Poses to practice to build strength for headstand: 1. Forearm plank - hold 20-60 seconds 2. Dolphin - walk feet up as close as possible with straight legs; important to press down into forearms to engage/protect shoulders (this is even more important in the headstand to prevent collapsing on your head!) Elbows squeeze in 3. Tip toe up even more and rest the back crown of your head on the floor, untuck toes to shift most of weight in your forearms/shoulders (very little weight on head and toes) Elbows touch side of head 4. Tuck one knee up at a time, feeling the weight shift more into the forearms/shoulders 5. When that feels more comfortable, tuck other leg up, so now both knees are into your chest and heels are to glutes 6. Slowly straighten legs up to straight for headstand! So strong wrists is part body structure, part "before I came to yoga" lifestyle but definitely still workable. Like in ballet they do lots of calf raises and feet strengthening exercises to strengthen their ankles, it's kinda the same for wrists, small movements to strengthen the forearms and fingers will help the wrists so here we go: - 1. SQUEEZE & OPEN Squeeze everything into your fists then let it go. If you have a stress ball or something similar like your spouses arm or a small child... KIDDING but you know what I mean - 2. PINCH & OPEN You don't have to fully open the fingers but focus on the pinching like @jamieoliver does when he takes a big pinch of salt and drizzles it from up high - 3. FINGER TAPS Basically it's like counting fingers, it's a really simple move but it's effective and intricate. Mobility in our fingers and toes is one of the first things to go as we age and once your fingers and toes go, a lot of other things go too. So keep wiggling them phalanges - 4. Here are 3 easy wall stretches that you can do at home without any equipment, to help release some of the tension in your hips!. Hip Stretches: 1️⃣ Wall Straddle Stretch: Scoot your butt as close to the wall as you could and open your legs out into a straddle position. Ease yourself slowly down, and place your hands in the inside of your thighs to gently ease it closer to the ground. 2️⃣ Figure Four Wall Stretch: Place one ankle across the other thigh. Bring the leg on the wall down into a 90 degree angle, bringing the other leg horizontal and closer to your chest. Flex your toes to protect your knee. Keep pressing that leg close to your chest and you can rock side to side to open up the stretch. 3️⃣ Frog Wall Stretch: Move further away from the wall to begin. Bring the soles of your feet to the wall, flex your toes outwards and bring your knees in line with your ankles. Gently ease your thighs to the ground, and place your hands on them to further open up your hips. This beautiful backbend was something I once only dreamed of doing, so if you’re still at the stage where the first part of this video looks all too relatable, don’t sweat it! And you definitely shouldn’t fret if this seems really far off - it’s an advanced asana with a very deep backbend, & on top of that shifting the gaze is super challenging! #giveittime But when you are ready to start practicing this posture, below are 6 ways you can use yoga blocks to help make it more accessible. ❤️ Open the Upper Back: Place one or two blocks (depending on your flexibility) between the shoulder blades, or just under your shoulder blades. (2-4 min) Shoulder & Triceps Stretch: Place both blocks shoulder-width apart on the highest setting. Rest your elbows on the blocks & lower your head & heart. (1-3 min) Backbend Prep: Wheel & Forearm Wheel with a block in between the legs will help keep your adductors engaged & your feet parallel (hello safe knees! ). (5 breaths, 3 reps) With Blocks, Against the Wall: A great opportunity to practice a more accessible variation of this backbend without having to worry about the balance. The further you are from the wall, the less deep the bend. You can start playing with the gaze shift here too. Remember: DON’T force anything. Listen to your body, & take your time.
