I knew she would arrive a few minutes before me and together we were able to support this couple through a crazy fast delivery! It’s been a crazy and emotional day. I’m 36 weeks with some of my pretty typical early labor signs. I’ve never had a baby drop this early or watched this process start so soon. Eric is getting ready to go to sea and I’ve been an absolute basket case truly realizing there’s a good chance I will be doing this birth without him. Maybe it’s just the stress of knowing he’s leaving that’s setting me off. I’m feeling pressure to keep the house clean and the yard trimmed for house rental showings which just doesn’t feel ideal while trying to keep a baby in regardless of what it is, it’s been trying. I think some times you just have to feel it all to move past it and accept it. Today has certainly been that day for me. Today was healthy, and I needed to process it. I’m thankful for every birth he’s been home for so far and still just praying something will change before he leaves. Otherwise, meet my new doulas ☝#militaryfamily #homebirth

Yes, millions of women give birth every day, but YOU don’t give birth every day. • Having a baby is a BIG FREAKIN’ DEAL. Women deserve the chance to talk about even the most “textbook” birth experience; HOWEVER, unless you frequent the birthing world’s circles, many find they don’t have an interested audience. • I remember every second of my births and I remember wanting to talk about every second of them. • Processing your birth experience becomes even more crucial when your experience didn’t go as planned, or if at any moment you feared for you or your little’s life. • This week is birth trauma awareness week and I personally can’t overstate how important this cause is. Unaddressed birth trauma or the need to grieve and process an undesired birth experience is one of the most common themes I see. And while I am excited about the medical community’s interest in maternal mental health and trauma-informed care which will absolutely reduce many traumatic experiences EVEN IF the circumstances surrounding the experience can’t be avoided, I think we as a whole need to do better in honoring a new mother’s personal birth experience. • We need to allow women to talk about their vaginas, physical sensations, and other bodily functions without grimacing in disgust. We need to hold space for her realities without attempting to redirect her to be grateful or minimize her experience by reminding her it could be worst.
