Compassion. This is going to be a long winded post on compassionate care. Now that I am on the receiving end of this (not as a provider) I really understand what it means to feel heard. Many of you have been asking why I picked up my life and moved across the country, and the truth is... circumstances. My mom got diagnosed with High Grade Primary CNS Lymphoma. So I packed up in a haste, moved across the country with little more than a suitcase filled with a little bit of courage. After being bounced around from specialist to specialist we finally learnt about this rare diagnosis. To be honest it has been a huge learning curve for our entire family - learning to communicate amidst the angst, learning to be patient, learning to be flexible. And mostly learning to keep loving each other. And through all of this, the greatest support we have felt is receiving an empathetic ear. We have faced triumphs and sorrows. Lows you could not believe. With that being said.... Compassion from our most beautiful team of care providers has gone a really really long way. . We are grateful. We are blessed. We are humbled to be treated by this wonderful team that we feel is on our side. The extra few minutes they spend answering our questions has definitely helped us sleep much better at night. I cannot emphasize this enough. I feel like I have always tried to be compassionate with my patients. But now more than ever I try to practice this in my day to day interactions. You never really know what someone is going through. It might seem trivial but spending even 2 minutes alleviating your patient’s fears can mean a world of difference to them. after undoubtedly the hardest, most painful ten months of my life, I AM DONE WITH CHEMO!!! this is truly one of the happiest days of my life. as hard as this past year has been, i can’t help but see how much beauty has come from this journey. i’ve made incredible, life-long, new friends. i had the kindest, most beautiful nurses who cared for me like i was their daughter. i gained strength like never before, the kind of strength that is only gained when you experience an intense trial. & most of all, i saw right before my eyes, the incredible, awe-inspiring power of God. He has been so so faithful and has carried me up this mountain. He is the reason I am alive today & I will spend the rest of my life glorifying Him for this miracle. to all of you who have prayed for me and loved me, i could have never made it through this without you. thank you for changing my life. i will never be the same after cancer. i’ll never take another day for granted & always remember what a gift it is to be alive. i couldn’t be more proud to be able to say that i am a cancer SURVIVOR.

I ask myself everyday, why was it you and not me? Why did this happen to us? How is this fair? What did I do wrong? So many unanswered question will never be answered. I feel so much guilt as a parent, holding your little hand tonight as you struggle to keep your eyes open and breathing gets shallow from so many drugs but even though, in a few minutes you will still wake up in agony only getting a couple minutes of rest. When you turn to me as say “mummy can I have another bolus?” When most adults, and not to mention a 5 years old would even know what that is just breaks my heart. Today you got out of bed and walked to the scales as the nurses and I cheered on with praise that you managed to do that being so weak and frail. Most parents today are cheering on the sidelines for their child watching them play sports, but not us. We didn’t sign up for this, I didn’t agree to this as a parent, To bring my baby boy into this world to struggle so much having to fight for his life, to having a child who is so well educated on chemotherapy names and medications, to having needles prick him daily, to have my child say to me “when I get better mum can you take me here”, to have my youngest son beg to come into the hospital with us because he misses us being at home, And To having my heart in my throat every day because I can’t fix this.. This is just the tiniest little insight into my thoughts on the daily.. F you cancer, when will the time come, When we can say goodbye to cancer forever.
