Part 1/2 . . Who else is terrified of public tantrums? I know I am and we had one in the morning yesterday at a cafe. Why did it happen? Azaan wanted a bag of Jelly beans even though I repeatedly said " No, we can't. We just had our breakfast and I have your snack at home." Next came what is every parents' nightmare - screaming followed by rolling down on the floor, hands wailing - and this all happened while I was trying to pay for the food. My one hand was busy fishing out the wallet in my bag and other holding Azaan who was now tugging on my leg. Obviously, we weren't the only ones present there, oh how I wish it was just us. Some people glanced over to see what was happening and fellow parents passed empathetic looks assuring me that they too go through this.⁣ ⁣ You see when it comes to public tantrums you're not just worried about calming your child down but you also worry if other people are criticizing your parenting approach (which they shouldn't, obvs.) And I think the latter is what makes us more nervous about these full-blown tantrums and sometimes the thought "everyone is watching" stresses us out and we're this close to giving in these tantrums. But I know that if I give in my child will believe that his behaviour is acceptable. While I was juggling with this scenario the lady at the counter bucked me up and said "they get addicted to sugar, don't they? Well, at least you're saying no and not giving in. Good on you." At that moment, I felt as if the lady was my village - the village you need for raising kids. ⁣ ⁣ I immediately said " I know I probably look like a failed parent here but I'm very strict on his sugar intake and I know he will finish that pack in one go, I don't want him to." to which the lady responded "Hun, I would've done the same. You're doing good, we've all been through these tantrums. " I picked Azaan up, walked out, buckled him in his car seat and said " I know you're upset but we can't have those jelly beans because we've had enough food and sugar for now. We can talk more once you've calmed down." The crying and screams continued for a further three minutes and then it all stopped. And just like that all was back to normal.
