Here is an inspirational story for Easter Weekend. This patient story is incredible. BEWARE- this video is a VERY GRAPHIC example of severe knee injuries! As I recall, she was knocked off the back of a motorcycle in an accident and THEN run over by a truck! She was in the DR and at the first hospital they told her they needed to AMPUTATE both of her legs at the thigh! She left, and the next hospital told her she was fine and put her in some knee immobilizers and discharged her. She managed to get MRIs on her own that showed she was not fine at all. She had fracture dislocated both knees tearing ACL/PCL/LCL/Posterolateral Corner on both knees! Amazingly she got to the US and I happened to be on call for the Trauma Center when she presented. Given such severe injuries, together we agreed I would do a smaller, damage control procedure- that is, PRIMARILY REPAIR all of the ligaments to try and get her back on her feet. We would save the bigger, more morbid reconstructions for a later date only if needed. As you can see, in this case giving the body a chance to heal wasn’t such a bad choice! Total surgical time for both knees was less than it would have taken to reconstruct one knee! She is currently 2 years out and doing very well. Knees are stable! When I was a resident training in orthopedic surgery in the 1990s, I was taught that the ACL couldn’t heal and that’s why we did reconstruction for everyone. However when I went out to practice my experience taught me different. I followed my gut instinct and it has been 10 years since I did my first ACL primary repair. Now I have repaired well over 200 patients with excellent results. This video shows a great example of the healing potential of the ACL. Check out the capillaries running up the injured ligament!
