Fun hand-eye (or eye-hand) coordination game. Plastic wiffle ball tied to some string; can also tie the string to something but I usually just hold it... on the first one, I am telling her when to catch it so she has to watch it and be ready; if she just catches it, it’s a lot easier because she can catch it on the first swing (which is what they all try to do if I don’t play this way). The second one, where she is hitting it back and forth, I told her to switch hands back and forth (to work on some bilateral integration). When Andy has a cluster of spasms (seizures) I often feel so helpless. There’s no medication to administer in the moment, nothing I can do that will snap him out of it. He will sometimes cry after each one as if to express his frustration at the lack of control he has over his own body during an episode. As if he is annoyed each time he tries to latch on to breastfeed and a sudden spasm makes him fall off and have to start the process all over. As though he is completely exhausted each time he tries to drift off to sleep and a sudden spasm jolts him back awake. All I can do is hold him in my arms and squeeze his little hand. I find myself saying things like “I saw that” after each little spasm and “Mommy’s right here.” It clicked for me today that those are the very things we all want someone to do when we are going through something hard. We want someone to be there. There’s no perfect thing for them to say that will make you feel better. Nothing they can do that will take the hard thing away. But we can feel stronger and more resilient knowing that someone sees what we’re going through and acknowledges that it’s real and that our feelings are valid. My goodness is this little boy teaching me how to be a more compassionate, more empathetic human.

School is out for one. And the other is out on Friday. On the way to an eye therapy appointment for one daughter, then picking the other one up early for OT. What are you up to today? Ps...yes...I am still wearing jeans in this heat because I get so cold sitting in these offices!

⭐️ Sensory Saturday ⭐️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Just a quick one today folks! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did you know that a baby’s nervous system is TEN TIMES slower to process and respond to sensory input? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I didn’t! But I recently learned this in the amazing course I’m taking with @kailietswellness . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is why our newborns are so easily overstimulated. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When we are talking to them, when we are moving them, when we are stimulating them, when we are changing their diaper- low and slow is the name of the game to support their developing sensory system. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Talk in a low and soft tone, pause (a nice long pause) and give them time to respond with a coo, a look or a movement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Move them slowly and gently from place to place, allow them time to adjust from the warm cozy swaddle to the harsh cold air of the diaper change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Give yourself and your baby a little break from “being on the go” all the time, it is a lot for their little system to take in. Sometimes baby just needs a quiet, lazy (“boring”) day at home with mama. It’s okay to just “be” sometimes.
