Give this movement using breathing as it’s key to help reset your posture and alleviate these over stretched tissues. . . When you EXHALE tuck your ribs down into your stomach. . When you INHALE keep ribs tucked down, pull air DOWN into your low stomach/back/sides. Let the air fill your low belly up to your ribs- like a bucket of water filling from the bottom up. . . ➡️ Down Dog with Breathing 1️⃣ Exhale rubs tuck up. As you exhale push back into your hips and into your heels. 2️⃣ Inhale maintaining rib tuck. Focus on filling your low stomach/sides/low back. At @tuneupfitness we use our tools NOT just for Rolling and Massage, but also for stimulation, activation and #proprioception (or in this case #toeprioception ) Here, our impeccable Toronto based friend @alignment_rescue demonstrates a move she learned from me last weekend at the Yoga Conference. She’s a part of the worldwide teaching team for @nutritiousmovement RULES OF THE ROLL: Stand next to a wall and place a hand on wall to minimize your need to concentrate on balancing. Place the #yogatuneupball in front of your heel, in the cavity where your #plantarfascia inserts itself into your calcaneus. The rest of your foot remains placid and passive. NO SCRUNCHING OF ANY TOES. Hook your heel into the ball and sustain the contraction, as if your heel is trying to bite its way into the rubber. This isn’t a move where you flatten the YTU Ball with your body weight. Instead, try to mis-shape it from the side of the sphere, not the top of the sphere. If you’re able to fire your quadrates plantae, you may feel a dull ache at the exact location where the ball contacts your foot. Attempt as many rounds as you like, then roll out that area by squishing the ball and smushing it into your warm rear foot. Then step off and reflect while you FEEL your HEEL. Plantar Fascia Relief The plantar fascia is a thick tissue that connects the heel to the ball of the foot and supports the arch of the foot. Plantar fasciitis is an overloading syndrome caused by poor loading or gait mechanics during weight bearing activities. Pain can happen at the heel, or along the arch and the ball of the foot. The source of the problem could be different depending on the person, as always …. It depends. Overly flat feet could be a result of limited ankle mobility or weakness of the supinators/intrinsic foot muscles. Or maybe the limitations could be starting at the hip and moving downstream? It’s tough to know without a full movement analysis from a physical therapist. Test out the last two exercises in this video to address strength and motor control deficits, start with 2 sets of 10 repetitions. Also, be sure to check out our earlier videos on building the arch of the foot and glute med strengthening! ‍♀️‍♂️‍♀️ There is also the other end of the spectrum that can lead to plantar fasciitis with an overly arched foot. A rigid, high-arched foot does not have the mobility to compensate for movements. There is generally poor shock absorption and improper loading through the foot with weight bearing activities. If that’s you, here is a sequence of exercises you can use. . One interesting thing with the plantar fascia is there's very little if any inflammatory component to this pain. Great to see the Fasciitis Fighter in action with @dr.jacob.harden in his recent plantar fascia strengthening video・・・. Repost: HOW TO MAKE YOUR PLANTAR FASCIA STRONGER . Plantar fasciitis is kind of a misnomer. The -itis implies inflammation, but it actually is much more like a tendinopathy, which has little to no inflammation at all. Good thing is, it responds much the same way as well, meaning we want to strengthen it up. . A study by Rathleff et al compared heavy loading to stretching. The loading group got better faster and it showed us that the plantar fascia will respond to strength work. . The set up is to have the toes up in dorsiflexion, which can be achieved with a rolled up towel, or my personal favorite, the @fasciitisfighter tool that @hamishthephysio developed, which is much more comfortable to use. Because your plantar fascia wraps around the ball of your foot, this set up helps to direct the stress right into the plantar fascia where we need it. . To do it, go up under control, give a 2 second hold at the top, and take 3 seconds to come down. Week 1 - 3 sets of 12 reps Weeks 2 & 3 - 4 sets of 10 reps Weeks 4+ - 5 sets of 8 reps . In the study, they added weight via a backpack loaded with books, but holding a heavy kettlebell or dumbbell would work as well. Just make sure you're having to work. . In addition to this, you need to ⤵ back off on whatever bothers your foot. Nothing heals if you continue to pick the scab. Take it easy, get stronger, and build back up SLOWLY.
