When seasons collide By sowing my first round of winter veg before the end of summer I'm able to get a couple rounds in before the end of the season. This 2yr old Broccolini is just starting to put on its winter growth. It hasn't produced a whole lot over summer because it's a winter plant but it's produced enough to keep me from having to buy it. Just like capsicums and eggplants, you don't have to pull all plants out at the end of their season. As long as you put them in the right spot and harvest from them continually to encourage fresh growth, they can live for years. - Broccolini is ideal for this because it continually produces many florets on the one plant. They'll go dormant and look pretty sad in summer but as the chill returns to the air, the plant comes back to life. You just need to ffind the prime spot for it. This Brocolini is in full shade and I haven't really been feeding it through summer, I've only conditioned the soil with worm tea and seaweed solution and watered it daily.(Broc needs a lot of water) I've found that avoiding full spectrum fertilizers in summer, prevents the plant from getting leggy and bolting to seed. I help the plant concentrate on root growth instead. If you happen to be planting your Broc out this weekend, plant them in the coolest corner of your property in summer but one that gets sun in winter. Think about planting under deciduous tees. They lose their leaves in winter so what's under them gets sun and they grow leaves in summer to provide shade. Perfect for veg that you don't want bolting to seed, like your spinach/chard/brassicas and softer leafy greens like lettuce and delicate things like Dill and Chervil. Get to know your garden and it's conditions. Spend one day every season, just sitting in your garden and watching where the sun goes from dawn to dusk. You'll be so glad you did. Have a great day folks and happy digging! ✌ . . . #sarahsgardeningtips #gardeningforbeginners #broccolini #gardening #howtogrowveggies #gardeningtips #gardeningtip #instatip #selfsufficiency #urbanfarming #urbanhomestead #homeharvest #homesteading #homegrown #veggiegarden #veggiepatch #plants #kitchengarden #digyourfood #chicksthatdig

A dibble (aka dibber or dibbler) is a small piece of wood with measurements on the side, used to make holes for planting and sowing. The simple nature of the dibble enables you to get deep into the soil without disturbing it too much. A dibble can be T-shaped, L-shaped or simple and straight like mine. And of course you can easily make your own with any stick you find lying around, which know is my idea of awesome! Just be sure to pop some coloured tape around the end of it so it can easily be seen when it's lying around the garden. The Easter long weekend is one of the traditional times to plant garlic. Another rule of thumb is to plant bulbs on the shortest day of the year and harvest on the longest day of the year. Every clove you sow will become 10 so be sure the bulbs have plenty of space between them. Plant your garlic in a nutrient rich but light soil situated in full sun. If you've had a lot of rain you can pop a handful of river sand under each bulb to stop them from rotting. Jerudalem artichokes are highly sort after for their unique buttery flavour. But because they don't store well out of the ground, they can be hard to find in the shops and when you do find them, the price can be ridiculous! Growing your own will not only provide you with kilos of delicious tubers and save you money, you'll have plenty to share with your J Choke loving friends! As cool soil increases the flavour, harvest your J Chokes in autumn or early winter when the stems have died off. You can harvest them from the time the flowers cease to bloom but you'll get a bigger, tastier crop if you leave the majority until the weather is cool. If you don't get heavy frosts where you are, you can leave them in the ground as a way to store them until you're ready to eat them. (Known as cold storage) I've also stored mine successfully through winter in a Styrofoam box with a mix of sand and soil. But be careful not to grow them in too many places in your garden because they can become invasive of you don't get all the tubers out of the ground. DIY Cabbage Moth Decoys Cabbage Moths are territorial, which means they won't lay their eggs in the presence of an unknown cabbage moth. (they'll still drink from your flowers but that's harmless ) Using this information to our advantage, we can make fake moths for our gardens to keep them away from the brassicas. I've been doing it for years and it never fails! Step 1. Wash and cut the flat part of any plastic container out. Step 2. Draw as many moths as you like being sure to keep them at a realistic size. Don't forget the dots so they actually look like cabbage moths or they won't work. Step 3. Cut them out. Step 4. Poke a hole in the middle of the moth. Step 5. Thread it onto a skewer. And that's it! Put as many as you like in your garden and watch the moths flutter by! Follow the hashtag #cabbagemothdecoys to see them in action. If you're going to be growing your own food you're going to want a good scrubbing brush that's just for the veggies. It also helps to have a sink and tap outside so you can direct the water back onto the garden. It'll save your pipes from getting clogged with the soil and debris that washes off your veg. You don't need a big fancy chook tractor to keep happy freeranging chickens in a suburban backyard. A piece of chicken wire with a few stakes will enable you to move your flock around the garden with ease. Simply roll it up and move it where you'd like them to be, remembering that they always need access to fresh water and shade. I even set them up on the garden beds before a crop rotation so they can clear any bugs out for me. Make sure you've clipped their wings though, because chickens can fly and curious ones will. This is only a quarter acre block but thanks to this simple technique, my chooks have plenty of space to happily move around and forage. Turn plastic containers into mini hothouse to protect tender seedlings from the cold night air and damaging frosts in winter. Puncture holes in the base to allow for drainage and fill with your regular seed raising mixture to sow seeds directly into them. Close your mini hothouses up at night to keep your seedlings snug and warm but be sure to remember to open them in the morning to allow your plants to breath and to avoid overheating them during the day. Mini hothouses can even be kept on a sunny windowsill inside the house. When your seedlings are too big to fit under the closed lid, plant them out. You can use any plastic container to create a mini hothouse, soft drink bottles cut in half will do the same job as the boxes with lids. (Pic 2) You're limited only by your imagination and access to recycle bins so why not get creative and make your own mini hothouses this weekend.
