When seasons collide By sowing my first round of winter veg before the end of summer I'm able to get a couple rounds in before the end of the season. Have a great weekend folks and happy digging! ✌ . . #tomatoes #brassicas #chinedecabbage #broccoli #veggiegarden #veggiepatch #gardening #gardeningtip #tips #sarahsgardeningtips #teachtheworldtogrowfood #plantstagram #plants #plantbaseddiet #backyardgarden #selfsufficiency #sustainability #gramyourgarden #digyourfood

#Repost @digyourfood • • • • • Quick Tip ✔ In the past we've learned that you can float seeds to see which ones are good for saving. (If they float they're no good.) But another simple way is to use observation. Flat seeds have no embryo inside which means they can't germinate. If a seed is flat and you can compare it to another in the same batch which looks plump, then it's not worth saving. ... But it is worth throwing in the compost just incase. Have a great day folks and happy digging! ✌ #teachtheworldtogrowfood #gardeningtip #tips #instatip #seedsavers #seedbank #seeds #seedfreedom #saveseeds #urbanfarming #growingveggies #urbanfarming #urbanhomestead #veggiegarden #veggiepatch #gardeningforbeginners #igers #digyourfood #unlv #unlvgarden #garden #gardening

The Easter long weekend is one of the traditional times to plant garlic. Another rule of thumb is to plant bulbs on the shortest day of the year and harvest on the longest day of the year. Every clove you sow will become 10 so be sure the bulbs have plenty of space between them. Plant your garlic in a nutrient rich but light soil situated in full sun. If you've had a lot of rain you can pop a handful of river sand under each bulb to stop them from rotting. #Repost @digyourfood with @get_repost ・・・ This is one of the most important messages that I try to get across to you all in my feed and it's your favourite tip of 2018! You really don't need a lot of money to grow your own organic food, you just need to be persistent, consistent, patient and a little creative. And if you're like me and are lacking in some of those areas, well there's no better way to learn them than to grow an edible garden. Another message I want you all to hear is that your garden doesn't have to be award winningly perfect and instagram ready! Working gardens are often messy and overgrown. You've got plants going to seed, trellising, bins full of stuff steeping to become fertiliser, tools and piles of compost. So please don't feel disheartened if your garden isn't photogenic or if it's small or just not what you wish it was. As long as it's providing you with some beautiful healthy produce that's all that matters! So show that garden and your hard work off with pride! Lastly, I'd like to thank all of you for making DigYourFood what it is. We're very blessed to have such a lovely and supportive gardening community here on IG and I'm incredibly grateful for all of you! It's been a fun and fulfilling 6 years sharing with you all the lessons I've learned on the road to self-sufficiency and I'm looking forward to another one! I hope your heads aren't too sore this morning and I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday with the ones you love! Jerudalem artichokes are highly sort after for their unique buttery flavour. But because they don't store well out of the ground, they can be hard to find in the shops and when you do find them, the price can be ridiculous! Growing your own will not only provide you with kilos of delicious tubers and save you money, you'll have plenty to share with your J Choke loving friends! As cool soil increases the flavour, harvest your J Chokes in autumn or early winter when the stems have died off. You can harvest them from the time the flowers cease to bloom but you'll get a bigger, tastier crop if you leave the majority until the weather is cool. If you don't get heavy frosts where you are, you can leave them in the ground as a way to store them until you're ready to eat them. (Known as cold storage) I've also stored mine successfully through winter in a Styrofoam box with a mix of sand and soil. But be careful not to grow them in too many places in your garden because they can become invasive of you don't get all the tubers out of the ground. It's time to share the garden love again! I want everyone to know the joys of growing your own food. So this time I want you to tag any mates who could use a little encouragement in the garden. It can be someone who's expressed an interest in gardening, or they're in their first year of growing stuff, it doesn't matter as long as you think they're worthy. And you don't have to like/ share/or name your firstborn after me Just tell me who you nominate and you'll BOTH go into the draw to win 5 packets of seeds each to get you growing through the next season. You've got until Monday. Ready set go! ✌ . . #teachtheworldtogrowfood #payitforward #savetheplanet #win #seeds #giveaway #competition #instagiveaway #seedgiveaway #beinittowinit #digyourfood

For those heading into spring planting, I have a quick tip. Grow your tomatoes on the east facing side of a trellis and beans on the west facing side. The two are happy companions and the beans protect the tomatoes from the hot afternoon sun. Autumn is peak season for Eggplants so keep feeding them right up until the last week of fruit. But don't pull the plant out when they're done! If your eggplant is protected from frosts, it'll happily make it through winter. It just needs a prune in spring, kind of like the way you'd prune back a rose. For years I've grown my eggplants and capsicums in a bed under the branches of a big old peppercorn tree that faces the morning sun. They have just the right amount of protection to make it through winter. But if you don't have a big old tree you can also pot your plants up and put them on a verandah in the sun for winter then drag them out in spring.
