So back to my tasting of a few Aussie drams I shared a week ago. First up, the Hobart Whisky First Release- Bourbon cask 48% abv. You never quite know what to expect with a first release But being from Australia’s whisky capital you would expect good things. Well let me tell you.....I love this stuff. It’s amazing! On first opening, you get this pleasant scent of the sweet beeswax and vanilla. When it hits your mouth... it’s soft, it’s creamy, it’s sweet creme brûlée and toffee. What a beautifully made whisky. These guys should be proud. When the wallet permits, I will definitely try more from this distillery. So glad I got 2 bottles.

I offered him $$ for it then doubled it but he still said no. I wouldn’t have sold it either Does anyone else have one or know it’s value? OK, Hellyers Road up next One of the largest whisky distilleries in Australia. Now I have to be honest here so stick with me. My first bottle of Hellyers Road Whisky was bought about 10yrs ago. Maybe my palette was a bit immature as I thought it was terrible, much like a golden paint stripper 10yrs later I still have 3/4 of a bottle. Now rewind to 6 months ago I received a bottle of the Hellyers Road 16yr as a member of the whisky club. It’s been sitting in my cupboard a little reluctant to try. As I was sitting down with a mate to compare some Aussie whisky I knew this 16yr First fill American Oak casks @ 47.5% abv had to be included. Well, how things change or I’ve changed. This is great. It’s quite unlike the Hellyers Road I remember. Absolutely beautiful natural golden amber with notes of vanilla, caramelised apples and barley. Its sweet, smooth, buttery with butterscotch and orange. I will definitely be finishing this bottle I just may revisit the 10yr. Sullivans Cove Double Cask- Just in today and will be a keeper for me as this one is a special anniversary release in this beautiful wooden box. Double Cask whisky was the winner of Best Australian Single Malt at the 2018 World Whiskies Awards, aged in a combination of French and American oak casks giving it incredible complexity and length. The Double Cask has a rich palate of sweet malt, dried apricots, honey and freshly baked bread. Redlands Distillery Now call Old Kempton Distillery. Located in Dysart House, an 1840’s manor in the picturesque colonial town of Kempton, 40 minute drive from Hobart. I noticed it sitting quietly at the back of the shelf. Not sure when I’ll open it... but it will be opened I was told there’s not to many bottles left, how many? I’m not sure. Pinot oak cask @ 46%abv. Official notes are a delicious, rich, floral dram.
