Boston Marathon 2019 Part 6... (yep, still going!) No matter how hard the race was, or how disappointed I was with how it went, running down Boylston Street is worth it! Reading the recaps of so many other runners has reminded me that running The Boston Marathon is about so much more than my finish time. It’s about the years of training that it took to qualify for Boston in the first place. Then the fight at the 2018 Boston, in the freezing rain, to requalify for Boston 2019. For me it also meant battling through a knee injury in 2018 (while skiing on Spring Break) just 5 weeks before Boston & dealing with a calf injury this training cycle off & on since October. l was also reminded that I’ve only run 6 marathons, 5 of those in the last 3.5 years. I’ve learned & improved so much during that time there’s no doubt I still have a lot to learn! ALL THE EMOTIONS on today’s run, you guys. . I get this way at the end of a training cycle. I reflect on all of the hours of hard work that’s been put in to get me to this point. The sacrifices that have been made. The workouts that left me feeling on top of the world. And the not so good days. The ones where I walk into the house in tears because I’m not as fast as I used to be. Feeling like I’ll never reach the goals I’ve set for myself. . But that’s what I love about running. It can demand the very best of you. And at the end of the day you can do all the right things, but you still have to trust that on race day you can execute everything perfectly. . I’ve only shared my time goal for Sunday with the handful of people that have asked about it. I didn’t want to risk shouting it to the world, and then fall short (or completely bomb) and feel embarrassed by it. But you know what? Screw that. Here’s what I know. I’ve worked my butt off for this. And I’ve trained for a sub-3:30 (a BQ ). And if I fall short on Sunday I know it will be due to things out of my control. Boston Marathon 2019 didn’t disappoint. I never hit the high that I got in NYC last year but for the first time in my marathon career I ran a smart race. I knew by mile 8 that it was going to be a battle to the finish. I was mentally ready for that fight 2:40 finish time and almost a 3 min PR . . Even though I was off of Instagram for a while, I still got so much support from you guys! Some of you found me on Facebook and Twitter, others found my phone number (creeps) and many of you got to me through my personal secretary @chris_py_kreme_runs (Thanks bro, all the love) I cant even tell you how much that meant to me. Boston Marathon 2019 Part 4... As I made that turn on Boylston St, the crowd was SO loud, the finish line was in sight, & it started to rain! The rain felt like a cruel joke at that point after suffering in the sun for the 2nd half of the race! I was immediately overwhelmed with emotions, but trying to hold it together, because crying while running makes it hard to breathe! To my right, a runner was laid out flat on her back with a medical team surrounding her & a stretcher being wheeled towards her. My heart broke for her! I pray she is ok. I couldn’t help thinking, that close to the finish line... yet she won’t get there. No matter how disappointed I am with my race, I’m grateful to have run my 2nd Boston Marathon; to have finished on my own 2 able feet, with no injuries. Adding a Canadian medal to my collection 2:03:25! Ottawa is a beautiful city & I loved touring it by foot! • Today could have gone much worse. It was hot, it was windy & I am out of shape. Running can be so humbling. ❤️ Every time I toe a start line, if I’m prepared or not, I get the same nervous feeling. But today was the first time that I honestly was worried if I’d finish. I knew I was not in half marathon shape. But I had a ridiculous plan & I just went for it. I had to make it back to my hotel to shower before a noon check out. I listened to my body & walked A LOT after mile 6 & I was totally okay with that.
