It’s really difficult to return to sport after an serious injury. You have to have the will and the mindset and the drive. I tore my ACL and had reconstructive surgery April 2017, then had a follow up surgery because of set backs in March of 2018. Getting back on the mats is hard and not because I don’t want to do it but because my recovery was so difficult that it scares the shit out of me that it will happen again. I am far from where I was when I injured my knee and I have a lot of work still to do to get muscle back and movement back. I’m slow and weak but I’m out there! This is the exact position that tore my ACL a year and a half ago and it scares me but I’m doing it and I’m damn proud of myself today! #aclrecovery #aclrecoveryclub #aclcomeback #jiujitsu #slowlybutsurely #takingmytime #myjourneydoesnotendhere #rehabaddict #inrehabforlife #saveyourknees #dellariva #blackbeltwomen
6 MONTHS POST-OP
I still remember those early post-op weeks that seemed to never end, where I melted away in bed binge-watching Jane the Virgin, like they were yesterday. In honour of 6 months, I'll be recapping the 6 most painful moments and 6 most grateful experiences I've endured. I'll start with pain. Why? Because these painful moments are what fuel me for this long ass marathon–I'm only HALFWAY there y'all!!!

1. Not knowing what was up with my knee, after going back and forth between multiple health professionals over the course of 5 months (see my older posts for my full story). My friend Sarah took this photo of me after I ranted to her about my frustration and before I left for my beach ulti game (yes, with a torn ACL that I didn't know about)
⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Accepting that I wouldn’t be touring in summer 2018 (after learning about the MRI results), having been determined to be better for the 2018 season as soon as 2017 nationals ended
⠀⠀⠀
3. Sidelining my high school team in senior year (following MRI results and while awaiting surgery after graduation), having looked forward to my Grade 12 season as soon as my Grade 11 season ended
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Waking up after surgery. When I woke up in the hospital, I ate a popsicle...but then vomited the popsicle. When I was home, I felt nauseous whenever I tried using my phone/laptop and lost my appetite
⠀⠀⠀
5. Feeling constipated from dat oxycodone!!! By day 5, I still had no bowel movement, even though I was taking prescribed laxatives alongside this hardcore painkiller. THANK GOD FOR RESTORALAX AND SHOPPERS FOR BEING OPEN ON CANADA DAY
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6. Losing my quad muscle. I mean, how are you supposed to react when you can physically see and feel a part of yourself that you've worked on for so long just wither away? ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, when I say that this ride has been painful, it has been painful mentally, emotionally and physically. But I still wouldn’t trade the pain for anything, because without them, I wouldn’t have learned how to take better care of my FEMALE body (and thus PRONE to this type of injury) and how to seek medical help when it comes to serious injuries!
