Tips for camping with T1D: ❕always, always, ALWAYS have backup batteries for your PDM or meter (learned this the hard way ) ❕keep your devices on you to either keep warm or out of heat ❕let everyone who is with you know that you have diabetes and what to do in the case of an emergency (ie-hypo) ❕bring low snacks that are effective but don’t take up much space, such as @honeystinger , glucose gels, and packets of honey. ❕double up! Bring extra supplies of what you think you need. I like to keep the basics in my fanny pack, and then the spares in with my clothes ••• Where are some of your favourite spots to camp? *how I wish my attitude towards diabetes is at all times* But for real been slacking in A LOT of areas lately. Work has once again consumed me while my health & fitness take a back seat and I start to fall into that horrible rut! Feeling like because I’ve been working so many hours that I “deserve” certain things - food I shouldn’t be eating, alcohol I shouldn’t be drinking, online shopping I shouldn’t be doing. Time to hit the reset button How do YOU restart & refresh after pulling yourself out of a rut?!

Went to the dr yesterday....my numbers are on point and while I’m thrilled, I can’t believe how far we’ve come at being able to handle this chronic disease. From the time I got it in the early 90s until now, things have come such a long way. These two little things on my arm are what help keep me on point and able to live a perfectly normal life. One gives me insulin, the other monitors my sugar. This is Type One Diabetes Nevaeh forgot her #omnipod PDM (that is what gives her insulin so she can eat carbs without her blood sugars going crazy) at school today. She was instantly in tears knowing she wouldn’t be able to eat carbs unless she got a shot. She hasn’t had a real shot of insulin since last September. Don’t get me wrong she gets her @dexcom and her Omnipod shot, butttt a needle looking at you right in the face is much different. We had to get “The Magic Unicorn” and count to 10 and she did it! She remembered it wasn’t as bad as she thought and you guys she is the toughest girl I know! But this is Diabetes life, she can not LIVE her amazing life without insulin. There isn’t a night I don’t pray for a cure without also thanking God for the man who invented this precious gold medicine. I also thank God for this Man that she calls Dad because he is the one person who can calm her down and talk her off the ledge of a freak out. What is a Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)? Why is everyone so obsessed with it? And why is it so important? • HbA1c is used to diagnose diabetes, monitor treatment, and identify people at risk for diabetes (prediabetes). But what does it all even mean? And why are both clinicians and patients so obsessed with this HbA1c number? • HbA1c is also known as glycated hemoglobin. The most common form of hemoglobin is called hemoglobin A, a transport protein found in red blood cells. As glucose circulates in the blood some of it spontaneously binds to hemoglobin A, thus the more glucose present in the blood, the higher the HbA1c. Once bound to hemoglobin A, the glucose remains bound for the remainder of the red blood cell’s life (approximately 120 days). This is why it only makes sense to recheck our HbA1c every 3 months! • According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) diabetes can be diagnosed if a HbA1c is measured above 6.4% (meaning 6.4% of that person’s glucose is bound to hemoglobin). Prediabetes is diagnosed when HbA1c measures between 5.7% and 6.4%. Once diagnosed, HbA1c is used to evaluate glucose control by giving an estimated average glucose level (eAG) over a 3-month period.
