This is Ed, short for Shit ‘Ed FAQ - This is my Stoma, which is actually my small intestine. He doesn’t hurt and I can barely feel it because intestines don’t have any nerve endings! I just feel the skin around him, which is sore. He feels wet and slimey, sort of like a tongue Long Story short, I have Crohn’s disease (diagnoses at 10yo). I had surgery when I was 17 to have my large bowel & rectum removed. Now I shit in a bag out of my intestine that’s hanging out of my belly ✌️ I no longer have a butthole because the surgeons closed it during surgery. I still fart, but out of my belly Most of the time I don’t know when I’m pooping.. but sometimes I do and it kinda feels like pins & needles in your belly. Sometimes my bag leaks & I shit on my childhood teddy.. But to put it bluntly, bag life is much better than shitting yourself. I’ve had surgery to swap my Stoma side due to abscesses. Now I’m 21 years old, I’ve had 4 surgeries, 3 ‘new’ Stomas & Im just trying to live the best life I can! Any questions, please ask

This past weekend a 10 year old boy took his life… He was being bullied for having an ostomy. As a mother and an ostomate this hit me especially hard. I can’t imagine the pain and heartache that Seven endured leading up to him taking his own life. . I keep hearing people say we need to teach our children that different isn’t bad and while that is true, it’s so much more than that. Simply teaching our children that different isn’t bad gives them permission to stand by as long as they aren’t the ones bullying others. We must teach them to be empathetic, to be a listening ear, to be a friend, to help, to encourage, to love, and to stand up to bullies. Being sick is exhausting and sometimes we just need someone to come along side of us. TEACH YOUR CHILD TO BE THAT PERSON!! Better yet model that behavior and they will learn from watching you. . My boys will be raised knowing the importance of being there for someone else. I pray they have the strength and courage to stand up to bullies and defend their friends. I hope they remember what we have been through and someday because of that they are able to be there for someone else. I will never be shy about my ostomy and I will never make my kids feel bad for asking questions or talking to people about it. It might not be “normal” but it’s not bad or weird and its certainly not anything to be embarrassed about. I've had a colostomy for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until Facebook came about that I realize there were others like me. With the recent news of 10 year #SevenBridges taking his own life because of the bullying that he received for having a stoma, our community are all standing together and showing our ostomies in rememberance of him and support of his family. Maggie Baldwin, Nurse Manager, has a perfect story to share! . “The day I returned to school post-ostomy surgery, my best friend pulled me into our high school’s bathroom and asked to see my new battle wounds. I asked her if she was sure, because I was still trying to find the courage myself to look at my “new” stomach. . I pulled up my shirt to show my midline scar still bandaged up with my clear ostomy bag. Her instant reaction: “We have to name it!”. I was shocked by her reaction, totally expecting her to look away with disgust. Instead, she declared my stoma’s name to be Leroy. . Here I am, 10 years later, so very thankful that my friend made what I thought to be an embarrassing situation, a totally normal one. Simply by naming my stoma, she made it clear to me that she did not care that I had an ostomy. .
