Have not had any matured Spätburgunder like that for a long time. Full deep nose of Cherry, forest and black truffle. Still a lively acidity, deep impact on the palate, so fresh and matured at once. I am so impressed. The wine is 12 years old by now, and right on it's Peak. Fortunately I know a winedealer who's still got some bottles of that Beauty on Sale. 2012 Domaine Ponsot - Corton Grand Cru Cuvée de Bourdon (91 pts) @vineyardbrands · · ‍♂️ Did you know the Domaine Ponsot is an early adopter and inventor of wine innovations❓· · ℹ️ This wine is Pinot Noir from the Corton Grand Cru appellation. The wine is a blend of 4 different sites on the hill of Corton. Domaine Ponsot is known for picking late. Known for incorporating stems, but to stem or not destem is truly a vintage specific question to answered post harvest. Wines are aged in barrel for 2 years, but never with new oak. Known for fairly reductive winemaking due to not using SO2, so the wine is only racked once post fermentation and never interacts with oxygen until the customer opens the bottle. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and no SO2· · Medium+ ruby color with a pale rim· · Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of red cherry, strawberry, red currant, smoke, oak, cinnamon, stemmy, herbal, and brown sugar· · The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ chalky tannins, medium+ alcohol, and medium+ body. Solid texture to a weighty Pinot Noir. A medium+ length finish of ripe red fruit, spice, and chalk· · This wine went head to head with the 2009. Overall, this wine was still a bit austere and needs a lot more time to mellow. A lot of structure between the acid, tannins, and alcohol (14%). 2012 red Burgundy is definitely a vintage of low yields due to late spring frost. Then significant hail damage in early fall. The grapes that survived have a lot of concentration and tannins. This fits the bill exactly. Really needs to be forgotten about for another 6-8 years, so it can unwind and stretch it's legs.

Two weeks later and I’m still day dreaming about Adriane from @coleneclemens Embodiment of finesse, this Pinot has an elegant bouquet of wild flowers that delight the nose while black skinned berries tickle the tongue. Not to mention, one of the longest finishes in Pinot history #thirstythursday

That was one of my last treat before leaving. Amazing to open such a bottle, the unicorn of the DRC. As usual it s impressive and the ratio of expectation is super high. Really deep flavors and delicate bouquet on the nose. Rita Hills appellation: Memorious (1.416ha), Bloom’s Field (3.03ha), Siren’s Call (1.214ha), Clos Juliet (0.4ha), La Côte (3.844ha), and 6.27ha of appellation Sta. Rita Hills. Dramatically rising to an elevation of 700 feet above the Santa Ynez River, the Domaine lies on an ancient 25 million year old siliceous (silex) and diatomaceous seabed 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The Domaine was purchased by Raj Parr and Sashi Moorman at the beginning of 2013. Sashi Moorman discovered the site and developed the vineyards with Chris King in 2007. Under his direction, the vineyards were planted entirely to California heritage selections at extremely high vine densities between 4,000 and 7,000 vines per acre, unprecedented at the time for the appellation. Although the Domaine spans a mere 40 acres, the diversity of its climats is staggering: each vineyard has a unique geology, aspect, elevation and microclimate. Such distinct expression of site, or terroir, in such close proximity, is unparalleled in California.
