Art is a meditative process for me that satiates two important needs: experimentation (pouring) and enhancing skill (painting). Through this process I am able to 1. continue to build on a foundation and also 2. go crazy and try something new. The latter really requires me to simply trust - trust in the colors, trust in the movement, and trust in the moment. It’s this type of surrender that is so important to humanity. . . Art has always mended head to body to heart to soul - like everything is seamlessly working together, on the same journey. It’s a special union that only happens when you are in or moving towards your dharma. Anybody else catch this feeling? When does it happen?

I kept Romans 8:28 in the bottom of my shoes while competing for Miss New York. It was my armor—walking on the word: “And we know that all things work together for the good of them that love Lord, and are CALLED according to His purpose.” - In spite of not being a native New Yorker, and being called first runner up in June, I am Miss New York. It required me to learn a completely new state and genuinely make it my new home. I remember dreaming about it happening—not knowing when or how to expect it, but having confirmation that it was mine. When I wasn’t crowned in June, I was so confused, because I just thought I had God’s plan all figured out. He didn’t tell me how I’d get it—He just told me I would because I was CALLED according to His purpose. - God knew what I needed, and where I needed to be in September, when my mom would have a stroke, unexpectedly. God knew that I needed to be present to help make decisions that would save her life...While He knew that becoming Miss America was a dream I always chased, God knew it wouldn’t mean more to me than being there for my heartbeat—my mom. I can’t imagine having been at @missamerica during that time. Mentally, I don’t think I would have been strong enough to compete knowing that the whole inspiration behind my social impact was at death’s door. God really does know what’s best for us, and we have to trust His plan, even when things don’t make sense in the moment.
