Letter recognition can be so much fun and doesn't necessarily mean showing your little one a specific letter and asking them to say it. Of course we have to initially teach our little ones the sound that it makes, but I love to include our letter and sounds work within our play. Harrison was introduced to 's' last week and has been working on 'a' this week. Within this tray of bicarbonate of soda, I've also included a 'h' for his name an 'o' for Olivia and a 'm' for mummy, all sounds which he is familiar with. . The aim of our play was for Harrison to use the vinegar (plus paint combo) to discover the hidden letters. I carefully slipped in questions along the way to test his knowledge. . Tricky Word Jumble I shared this idea on my stories the other week... it is so simple and easy! Has your child been given 'key' words or 'tricky' words to learn from school? Why not display them on the fridge (bits of paper and blu tac or post it notes would work well) and then place the right magnetic letters needed to spell each word next to each word but jumbled up. Not only will your child be reading the word, they will be thinking about the spelling too. Win win! (As I am a mean mother, every time I walk past and it's done, I just jumble up the letters again ) ‍ The National Curriculum (DforE Sept 2013) requires children in year 1 to be able to read common exception words. Who else is rewatching Game of Thrones? ‍♀️ The children of the forest/white walker designs made me think of this . I originally saw this activity on @raisingdragons4 and thought we’d give it a little #easter_simple_play spin by using an Easter egg instead of a ping pong ball! It just uses rolled-out play dough and a straw to blow the egg. My 4yo was only able to do this twice before she got too dizzy but you might be able to get more play time out of it than we were, especially with a group of kids at Easter to take turns! And finally I can do #manywaystoplay with @flisatfun and @playtime.messy.madness because I usually miss it This week is eggs!

Trees! Our neighbours cut down a tree so we asked permission to venture through their forest to investigate but not before exploring #themagicandmysteryoftrees which is amazing. I pulled in our stump table to explain and explore tree rings before our field trip. We talked about photosynthesis using our grimms toys and road tracks because we can’t read charts and toys are always better Natural forest fires, nurse logs, fungi helping trees and the amazing root network were the favourite little talks. We brought back a pile of treasures for our science table too. A cold damp morning for tree planting but hey, that’s #natureschool right?
