Bernard Zackheim painted this wonderful mural in 1938. They’re renovating the entire building, seismic retrofit. I just hope they don’t destroy this auditorium in the “name of progress”. Great times & memories here. Countdown to three days ✌ to early retirement (though officially on June 27, 2019). FINAL BRUNCH OF MY STAY, VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. There’s actually Mac ‘n Cheese on the Breakfast menu! Everything else is a side order. The fruit cup (actually a bowl) was ordered separately over the phone by pressing the YES button. I inquired if they had a side order of fruit-yes indeed. I finally measured those bacon, over 7” long! Grapefruit & orange juices with pulp. That nice lady is Yohana from food services: my guide to the hotel, its services & suggestions for visiting San Francisco! The only thing I didn’t do was visit the gym✋. Ah no. I’m here for relaxation & fun. And to test gadgetry. Thanks to her & the hotel staff, I’ll be returning in the future. VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. Friday evening had a simple dinner of mushroom ravioli in a mushroom broth & a sliver of a chocolate ganache with San Pellegrino Sparkling Water. I found this welcome note from the staff. Months ago I scheduled this stay to include a microwave but it wasn’t available. Wonderful things about the Virgin Group: once you fill out your preferences, they follow you no matter where you go including your nickname. That San Pellegrino Essenza also came from that Virgin Red SMEG mini refrigerator. Today, Saturday, BREAKFAST: I ordered The Full English: country ham, baked beans, Chino Farm Egg. No egg (deadly allergies). What accompanies but is NOT listed are two delicious chicken sausages & 2-half slices of bacon. I ordered an additional 2-3pc bacon sides(3/$5.00 extra crispy & the bacon is nicely chewy), a thick Brioche with I estimate 10pats melted sweet butter. That Brioche toast is nicely toasted, warm, about 3/4-1” thick! The baked beans are in a tomato type sauce inside a thick buttery Texas toast. Also not listed is sautéed mushrooms. The bacon sits atop two stewed baby tomatoes . That and grapefruit & orange juices, San Pellegrino Sparkling water & ahem, 2-salted Virgin Chocolate pieces. The tray comes with full condiments: usual salt/pepper, Heinz Tomato Ketchup & two tiny bottles of Tabasco sauce. It’s breakfast time so they also include tiny jars of Bon Maman Orange Marmalade, Muscat Grape Jelly, Strawberry Preserves. I’m saving the jelly etc to put on pastries & ice cream. Before I explore the hotel I’m sipping a UK product, Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water: tonic water loaded with the fever tree’s quinine from the Democratic Republic of Congo. SUNDAY DINNER, VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. All my meals is via room service. There appears to be a a limited menu but there isn’t: they hope you go to the restaurant downstairs. You can order via app or through the television app. Being a new hotel, it’s a work in progress. So pick up the telephone , press the red YES button to be connected to the concierge: order from the menu & then ask if certain items are available. Generally they are. Roasted Halibut with greens , with rectangular slices of potato properly toasted & grilled slices of onions. The rest is labeled. Fever-Tree is a UK-based beverage company that uses the best ingredients possible. This ginger beer (ginger soda) is carbonated ginger, it taste crisp & sharp to the palate. A perfect bitters accompaniment to dinner. MENU: Evenings, Fish from the sea. Salad is the vegetable crudité with buttermilk, almond, dill foam. ALL ON/OFF controls all of the lights: everywhere in both chambers (rooms) EXCEPT the vanity mirror light & both photoelectric lit open air closets. ENTRY is a small but powerful light right above your entry way door. PRIVACY/MAKE UP ROOM is a voice link to housekeeping. Privacy is a silent reminder not to come in to make up your room-it’s an electronic Do Not Disturb sign. There’s a rocker switch by a window that is as wide as your chamber-a ceiling to floor blackout shade stealthily slides down at any height you choose. There’s plugs & USB ports although everyone knows I bring my own. There’s a Braun digital alarm clock with a ceiling displayed time-everything is adjustable.
