This deeply rich luscious thick chocolate cake is from Miete Bakery on Octavia Street, San Francisco, CA. I visit the one at The Ferry Building, aka the food emporium. Some of my colleagues threw an impromptu birthday celebration & tried their hardest to get me to join them-I was both busy in surgery & dense also (gotta be a guy thing). That’s a 1/4” thick icing! It took a bit of an effort to cut the cake-so thick & rich! The lady with the red hair is Marisa who had the cake custom made; the tall lady, Michelle a new mom, RositaL my culinary instructor with great patience, Shaun who brings back unique truffles/chocolates from his various vacation travels. Toland Hall, 533 Parnassus Avenue, Room 142, at UCSF Medical Center. Located in the University Hospital which was constructed in 1907. My favorite all time lecture auditorium. Bernard Zackheim painted this wonderful mural in 1938. They’re renovating the entire building, seismic retrofit. I just hope they don’t destroy this auditorium in the “name of progress”. Great times & memories here. Countdown to three days ✌ to early retirement (though officially on June 27, 2019). This is the USS STEWART DE238 WWII destroyer escort. These are photos topside & below decks. I actually went back & forth between here & the USS Cavalla because of the heat below decks. They were in the process of welding the topside areas, doing the usual preservation. Much of the paint below decks came off in small pieces due to the humidity & heat when I grasped the railings. The gun mounts were well shielded up to about shoulder height, above that, they’re exposed. Broadway, Galveston is where the colonial mega-mansions are. These are photos of the other buildings on campus here at UTMB Galveston TX. Many buildings are named after the Sealey Family: donors & far sighted thinkers who helped to propel UTMB into a world class medical institution. Here, is DrAl-Dossari demonstrating the flexibility of the average ICU. Whereas many medical centers have specialty ICUs: cardiac, general surgery, transplant, pediatric, neonate, spine. Here at UTMB, almost every room is similarly equipped, hence any room can quickly be converted into an ICU room anywhere in the building or at the other medical complexes on campus. Similarly on the outside of each room is a workstation manned by a nurse who has access to both rooms. Additional staffing is drawn from ICU float nurses & float pools. Each room has a sofa that can be converted into a comfortable bed for family members. Each room has the standard ceiling lift, a bathroom the size of hotel suite (re:large), a locked refrigerator also. I returned to UTMB @ Galveston to walk through the large campus. They’ve shuttles but preferred to walk, good exercise. Shriners Hospital is also on the same campus, it’s a regional burn center for children. Fountains can be observed by the main garage & throughout the UTMB complex. There are numerous plazas with plentiful seating. Had the opportunity to take photos of the lobby floor with it’s fine bar & a staircase to the mezzanine. It’s sort of Humphrey Bogart Here’s Looking At You blended with Art Deco intertwined with modern tech. That’s a real phone booth sans phone. Normally it’s Chris the doorman but he was momentarily busy with assisting a family with enough luggage to overwhelm SFO.
