HOUSTON METRO is a network that spans this great city. The cars are sort of similar to Portland OR’s Trimet line in that the KRVs(Light Rail Vehicles) were designed by Siemens. Here in Houston, the METRORail cars have a startup whistling sound similar to San Francisco’s LRV but the similarities end here: whereas San Francisco’s LRVs are noisy all the time, Houston’s aren’t. The stations are the same height as the METRORail cars so even wheelchairs can roll in unlike those of San Francisco’s which have ramps. Portland’s the same, no ramps (from what I observed). The local buses can’t be missed either: they’re colorful green/yellow/orange/blue/black is easy on the eyes. They’re comfortable as well. Many of the streets have cameras which I doubt are for traffic. Bubblecams usually seen in airports, government buildings, banks, etc can be observed here. However baring Big Brother, I’ve found the average Houston police officer to be a friendly, professional & a source of tourist information as well. For some reason, Google GPS/maps doesn’t work here as well nor does the Apple maps. Hence asking the ubiquitous police officer. Houston or not, I enjoy observation decks AND glass walled elevators, especially those that ride outside buildings. This greenery area is at the One Allen Center whose building is interconnected to others through overpasses or “skytunnels”. BOURAY’S PHO & GRILL, 609 Clay Street, Houston, TX 77002. One of my favorites, it’s a Vietnamese- Mexican fusion. I finally got to meet the other staff members. I ordered the excellent chicken quesadilla & egg rolls. The two 14” pizza slices are from Russo’s New York Pizzeria(604 Polk Street, around the corner from Bouray’s). At Bouray’s, there’s a roll of paper towels at each table should you make a mess (in addition to copious amounts of napkins escorting your meals). The interior is decidedly Tex- Mex. Your quesadilla is large, about the size of a large calzone. Asian- & Spanish- spices scent the aromas here as you walk in. There’s a public tiered fountain diagonally across the street. RUSSO’S NEW YORK PIZZERIA, 604 Polk Street, Houston, TX 77002 (around the corner from Bouray’s @609 Clay Street). I had to try anything that claims to be NY style or NY pizza. I ordered two regular cheese slices & not knowing their sizes, they gave me their giant 14” slices. They sell made from scratch Italian foods also. Their pizza comes close to NY style. However, it was a wait. Just enough ingredients so that the flavors aren’t overwhelming. Nice layer of mozzarella<>tomato sauce, thin enough crust. Just after entering, their daily specials are displayed just before you get to the cashiers. There’s a small though well stocked bar. WHATABURGER, 1000 Main Street, Houston Tunnel System, Houston TX. While most Whataburger branches are above ground, this facility is underground. This regional hamburger chain opened in 1950, around the time the McDonald Brother’s had their restaurant. I ordered a bacon cheese burger which in size is comparable to a large burger. Whereas most meals are burgers/fries/ shakes, I had the burger/salad/fries/vanilla shake along with a large fruit cup from another vendor in the Tunnel system. While waiting for your order, stand or take a seat with your Whataburger sign (mine=#46), a waitress will come out with your order along with an organized tray of condiments. MINUTE MAID PARK, HOUSTON TX opened in 2000, with a seating capacity of 41,168seats. It’s Houston’s first retractable roof stadium which was built to replace the Astrodome. Recently, the centerfield has been rebuilt & upgraded. To me, the exterior has a Wrigley Field quality to it although the inside is quite modern. On the highways, this is Houston with its modern skyscrapers. Most buildings seem to be built within the past five years but many are from the 1980s yet are futuristic & have sleek lines. The far right skyscraper is reminiscent of San Francisco’s Marriott Hotel. I take daily walks, photographing buildings & the locales, also doing reflective photography as well. Art abounds throughout the city, to break up the monotony of the steel urbanism. Most streets have these information poles with the appropriate information & its directional location. Just driving around in Uber (music from the driver) in a one mile radius in downtown Houston (drove the driver nuts). Many of the office buildings here are interconnected with overhead enclosed bridgeways although not all are air conditioned. Finally, finally landed yesterday in Houston TX. United Airlines, the venerable airline, was late as usual due to the snafus @SFO. The aircraft arrived late & we were first in the taxiing queue. Took a short nap (15min)-we were last in the queue-45min delay. Sat in first class with two stewardesses, one of whom was rude to me & my seat mate mentioned it each time. I had waved to get her attention to obtain a seat belt extender (about 3” for me) & she announced to both first/business class “I see YOU! You’ll have to wait, we’re not going anywhere & YOU’RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE!!” The other flight attendant quietly gave me a belt extender. Just after take off, she announced the food list AND snacks. That tray you see comes with oatmeal or a ham/egg/ cheese croissant sandwich plus the fruit/yogurt tray. Afterwards, she asked if I wanted something else-snacks? DEAR she snapped, THEY’RE for the last section ONLY! At the end of the flight, she coldly announced thanks for taking United, we PRIDE ourselves on our customer service. REALLY She’s the flight purser(name withheld): short Caucasian, bobbed hair with glasses, thin as a toothpick. I still fly United (although JetBlue is my favorite & United is my 2nd favorite), FL1958 SFO➡️IAH, 0900- 1530H. I’ve included the Safety Sheet for our 737-900 aircraft. At IAH airport, they have fully automated self serve kiosks, giant islands with food/sundries/ magazines/souvenirs-no photos, crowd of people there. At the gift shop, I purchased these doughnuts. You can get an Uber, Lyft, etc by standing in the TNC lane.
