VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. Friday evening had a simple dinner of mushroom ravioli in a mushroom broth & a sliver of a chocolate ganache with San Pellegrino Sparkling Water. I found this welcome note from the staff. Months ago I scheduled this stay to include a microwave but it wasn’t available. Wonderful things about the Virgin Group: once you fill out your preferences, they follow you no matter where you go including your nickname. That San Pellegrino Essenza also came from that Virgin Red SMEG mini refrigerator. Today, Saturday, BREAKFAST: I ordered The Full English: country ham, baked beans, Chino Farm Egg. No egg (deadly allergies). What accompanies but is NOT listed are two delicious chicken sausages & 2-half slices of bacon. I ordered an additional 2-3pc bacon sides(3/$5.00 extra crispy & the bacon is nicely chewy), a thick Brioche with I estimate 10pats melted sweet butter. That Brioche toast is nicely toasted, warm, about 3/4-1” thick! The baked beans are in a tomato type sauce inside a thick buttery Texas toast. Also not listed is sautéed mushrooms. The bacon sits atop two stewed baby tomatoes . That and grapefruit & orange juices, San Pellegrino Sparkling water & ahem, 2-salted Virgin Chocolate pieces. The tray comes with full condiments: usual salt/pepper, Heinz Tomato Ketchup & two tiny bottles of Tabasco sauce. It’s breakfast time so they also include tiny jars of Bon Maman Orange Marmalade, Muscat Grape Jelly, Strawberry Preserves. I’m saving the jelly etc to put on pastries & ice cream. Before I explore the hotel I’m sipping a UK product, Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water: tonic water loaded with the fever tree’s quinine from the Democratic Republic of Congo. RUSSO’S NEW YORK PIZZERIA, 604 Polk Street, Houston, TX 77002 (around the corner from Bouray’s @609 Clay Street). I had to try anything that claims to be NY style or NY pizza. I ordered two regular cheese slices & not knowing their sizes, they gave me their giant 14” slices. They sell made from scratch Italian foods also. Their pizza comes close to NY style. However, it was a wait. Just enough ingredients so that the flavors aren’t overwhelming. Nice layer of mozzarella<>tomato sauce, thin enough crust. Just after entering, their daily specials are displayed just before you get to the cashiers. There’s a small though well stocked bar. Toland Hall, 533 Parnassus Avenue, Room 142, at UCSF Medical Center. Located in the University Hospital which was constructed in 1907. My favorite all time lecture auditorium. Bernard Zackheim painted this wonderful mural in 1938. They’re renovating the entire building, seismic retrofit. I just hope they don’t destroy this auditorium in the “name of progress”. Great times & memories here. Countdown to three days ✌ to early retirement (though officially on June 27, 2019). HOUSTON METRO is a network that spans this great city. The cars are sort of similar to Portland OR’s Trimet line in that the KRVs(Light Rail Vehicles) were designed by Siemens. Here in Houston, the METRORail cars have a startup whistling sound similar to San Francisco’s LRV but the similarities end here: whereas San Francisco’s LRVs are noisy all the time, Houston’s aren’t. The stations are the same height as the METRORail cars so even wheelchairs can roll in unlike those of San Francisco’s which have ramps. Portland’s the same, no ramps (from what I observed). The local buses can’t be missed either: they’re colorful green/yellow/orange/blue/black is easy on the eyes. They’re comfortable as well. Many of the streets have cameras which I doubt are for traffic. Bubblecams usually seen in airports, government buildings, banks, etc can be observed here. However baring Big Brother, I’ve found the average Houston police officer to be a friendly, professional & a source of tourist information as well. For some reason, Google GPS/maps doesn’t work here as well nor does the Apple maps. Hence asking the ubiquitous police officer. It’s the destination within the Virgin Hotel. The walls & windows are in stark modern Asian against a backdrop of million dollar views of the business side of San Francisco. Soaring above 12 stories on a clear day, you can take in much of The City by the Bay. FINAL BRUNCH OF MY STAY, VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. There’s actually Mac ‘n Cheese on the Breakfast menu! Everything else is a side order. The fruit cup (actually a bowl) was ordered separately over the phone by pressing the YES button. I inquired if they had a side order of fruit-yes indeed. I finally measured those bacon, over 7” long! Grapefruit & orange juices with pulp. That nice lady is Yohana from food services: my guide to the hotel, its services & suggestions for visiting San Francisco! The only thing I didn’t do was visit the gym✋. Ah no. I’m here for relaxation & fun. And to test gadgetry. Thanks to her & the hotel staff, I’ll be returning in the future. The chicken pot pie is actually a large “bread” muffin to which a delicious chicken stew & gravy is stuffed into. The outside is the same as well, with larger chunks of gravy. Finally made it to my studio apartment @Homewood Suites LAX, that I’ll be residing in during my Los Angeles trip. United ✈️ left SFO late but managed to arrive 18minutes early! LAX is undergoing major renovations so their planners were obviously NOT thinking when they grouped hundreds of travelers into a tiny section waiting for their on-demand vehicles (Lyft, Uber...). The kitchen garbage can was surprisingly hidden under the sink-it’s usually under the table. The bed’s twin lamps have photocells-when I entered the studio approximately thirty(30) feet away, that entire area lit up-a plus. Each lamp is equipped with multiple plugs/USB ports. To be on the safe side, I brought my North Face Charger Backpack-I replaced the power bank with one of my own-20,400mAH with another Rav 20,000mAH as backup.
