Bernard Zackheim painted this wonderful mural in 1938. They’re renovating the entire building, seismic retrofit. I just hope they don’t destroy this auditorium in the “name of progress”. VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. Friday evening had a simple dinner of mushroom ravioli in a mushroom broth & a sliver of a chocolate ganache with San Pellegrino Sparkling Water. I found this welcome note from the staff. Months ago I scheduled this stay to include a microwave but it wasn’t available. Wonderful things about the Virgin Group: once you fill out your preferences, they follow you no matter where you go including your nickname. That San Pellegrino Essenza also came from that Virgin Red SMEG mini refrigerator. Today, Saturday, BREAKFAST: I ordered The Full English: country ham, baked beans, Chino Farm Egg. No egg (deadly allergies). What accompanies but is NOT listed are two delicious chicken sausages & 2-half slices of bacon. I ordered an additional 2-3pc bacon sides(3/$5.00 extra crispy & the bacon is nicely chewy), a thick Brioche with I estimate 10pats melted sweet butter. That Brioche toast is nicely toasted, warm, about 3/4-1” thick! The baked beans are in a tomato type sauce inside a thick buttery Texas toast. Also not listed is sautéed mushrooms. The bacon sits atop two stewed baby tomatoes . That and grapefruit & orange juices, San Pellegrino Sparkling water & ahem, 2-salted Virgin Chocolate pieces. The tray comes with full condiments: usual salt/pepper, Heinz Tomato Ketchup & two tiny bottles of Tabasco sauce. It’s breakfast time so they also include tiny jars of Bon Maman Orange Marmalade, Muscat Grape Jelly, Strawberry Preserves. I’m saving the jelly etc to put on pastries & ice cream. Before I explore the hotel I’m sipping a UK product, Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water: tonic water loaded with the fever tree’s quinine from the Democratic Republic of Congo. SUNDAY DINNER, VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. All my meals is via room service. There appears to be a a limited menu but there isn’t: they hope you go to the restaurant downstairs. You can order via app or through the television app. Being a new hotel, it’s a work in progress. So pick up the telephone , press the red YES button to be connected to the concierge: order from the menu & then ask if certain items are available. Generally they are. Roasted Halibut with greens , with rectangular slices of potato properly toasted & grilled slices of onions. The rest is labeled. Fever-Tree is a UK-based beverage company that uses the best ingredients possible. This ginger beer (ginger soda) is carbonated ginger, it taste crisp & sharp to the palate. A perfect bitters accompaniment to dinner. MENU: Evenings, Fish from the sea. Salad is the vegetable crudité with buttermilk, almond, dill foam. This is my Houston hotel, the Hyatt Regency, they gave me my same room for my birthday vacation. You’ll notice a desk height white device-they’re NOT speakers. I’ve allergies. It’s an air purifier, air flow management system that has a barely perceptible hum. It scours & pulls in the room’s air, filtering out particulates & releasing (in my opinion) surgery suite quality air back. One of the few hotels worldwide that has these. That’s one of two gadget bags on the bed from the airport. Comfy convertible sofa. The room comes with a combo closet/microwave/coffee/tea station with two bottles complimentary water. My first dinner, my first meal@hotel. I traditionally order room service when I arrive-in this instance, I was a bit queasy from the air turbulent flight & fruits. This is a six ounce medium rare steak with Merlot sauce, fluffiest mashed potatoes & veggies. SW style BBQ chicken wings (1st BBQ of the trip) with ranch dressing, giant fruit cobbler in a skillet (managed to consume 75% & leftover tomorrow). More gadgets/gear that I brought with me during my mini vacation. Additionally, one of my mainstay solar panels is either the ➡️Power Film Solar Charger or the Goal Zero Nomad-7, currently charging other gear at home. Purchased from Amazon, camping stores, some hardware stores, this rollup solar charger is approximately 5-7W panel with an integrated 18650Li Ion battery. It’ll take approxi-mately 3H initially to charge this solar charger. It’s lightweight, water proof panel(I’d still place it in a Ziplock bag because the charging ports at either ends are exposed). This is the ➡️RAVPower multi- functional tool: 6700mAH power bank, WiFi router that enhances the existing router signal, memory backup using a microSD card. I would suggest if you had a 64Gb smartphone or tablet, insert an 80Gb or higher microSD card. It has a WAN port to insert a hotel room’s internet cable, turning it into a wireless system. After charging it using a micro-USB cable, you’ll notice 4lighted dots, each representing 25% charging increments. This is a generic ➡️Amazon night light with motion detector, auto-on, flashlight only. I now carry two types of motion detection night lights. On almost every trip, something occurs with the hotel room lights, corridor or the hotel’s electrical system. Luckily the Hyatt doesn’t suffer from these issues. Celebrating my birthday (3/14/YYYY) at a local hotel . When it’s my birthday, I celebrate the whole month as I have since I was a kid. There’s a short welcoming foyer with an ice chest that leads to a combo bedroom & living room with an outdoor patio terrace. Arrived 3/15/2019 yesterday amidst the shouting of a protest(?) parade late. Inside the closet is one of those ubiquitous safes-but beware of the ceiling-the panels open up into a utility crawl space. I’ve placed sensors should a device or a short person decides to invade my party atmosphere. Since last year, it seems they switched suppliers to Pharmacopia from CO Bigelow Apothecaries. You can regulate the temperature of the shower from freezing cold (half a turn to 12-o’clock), lukewarm (12-o’clock to 9-o’clock), warm (9-o’clock to 3-o’clock), to scalding hot (2-full turns to the right). I like to steam it up a bit but not too hot. Drive down 9th Ave off Lincoln Way, the nice brick structure on your left, is the County Fair Building Hall of Flowers. It’s clean, spacious, has modern bathroom facilities. Parking can be a nightmare, so public transportation &/or on demand Uber/Lift or whatever suits you.
