Toland Hall, 533 Parnassus Avenue, Room 142, at UCSF Medical Center. Located in the University Hospital which was constructed in 1907. My favorite all time lecture auditorium. Bernard Zackheim painted this wonderful mural in 1938. They’re renovating the entire building, seismic retrofit. I just hope they don’t destroy this auditorium in the “name of progress”. Great times & memories here. Countdown to three days ✌ to early retirement (though officially on June 27, 2019). SUNDAY DINNER, VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. All my meals is via room service. There appears to be a a limited menu but there isn’t: they hope you go to the restaurant downstairs. You can order via app or through the television app. Being a new hotel, it’s a work in progress. So pick up the telephone , press the red YES button to be connected to the concierge: order from the menu & then ask if certain items are available. Generally they are. Roasted Halibut with greens , with rectangular slices of potato properly toasted & grilled slices of onions. The rest is labeled. Fever-Tree is a UK-based beverage company that uses the best ingredients possible. This ginger beer (ginger soda) is carbonated ginger, it taste crisp & sharp to the palate. A perfect bitters accompaniment to dinner. MENU: Evenings, Fish from the sea. Salad is the vegetable crudité with buttermilk, almond, dill foam. I went to visit a good friend of mine at UTMB, the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. There’s two arms of the University of Texas: Texas A&M, the engineering campus & UTMB, a series of medical campuses. This is Ghannam Al-Dossari MD, the chief of cardiac surgery including heart transplants. Formerly at UCSF, he was one of two leading cardiac surgeons who specialized in TAVR procedures. He’s standing in front of the original medical building, a beautiful structure that they continue to use to this day. We took a walk to the upper floor to the auditorium, where students & guests surround the lecturers. HOUSTON METRO is a network that spans this great city. The cars are sort of similar to Portland OR’s Trimet line in that the KRVs(Light Rail Vehicles) were designed by Siemens. Here in Houston, the METRORail cars have a startup whistling sound similar to San Francisco’s LRV but the similarities end here: whereas San Francisco’s LRVs are noisy all the time, Houston’s aren’t. The stations are the same height as the METRORail cars so even wheelchairs can roll in unlike those of San Francisco’s which have ramps. Portland’s the same, no ramps (from what I observed). The local buses can’t be missed either: they’re colorful green/yellow/orange/blue/black is easy on the eyes. They’re comfortable as well. Many of the streets have cameras which I doubt are for traffic. Bubblecams usually seen in airports, government buildings, banks, etc can be observed here. However baring Big Brother, I’ve found the average Houston police officer to be a friendly, professional & a source of tourist information as well. For some reason, Google GPS/maps doesn’t work here as well nor does the Apple maps. Hence asking the ubiquitous police officer. Friday, 1st day of my birthday hotel celebrations. One of my best friends & a colleague, RositaL, a renowned chef in her own right, made shrimp spaghetti with a chunky meat sauce surrounded by asparagus. She added four sweet tangerines. At the hotel, I had spaghetti & meatballs(2), a slightly peppery meaty clam chowder (a favorite of mine-add alittle spice is new to the menu), a soft & chewy heated sourdough roll with 2pats of Land- O-Lakes butter, an apple galette (brown pastry) & a fresh fruit tart, with a bottle of Sierra Mist. Designed to hold 2.5days of beverages: I stocked the mini- refrigerator with Hint Fizz Blackberry water & Purity Lemonade (alas only 15% juice). Gotta begin charging my gear: a sliding 4-USB port hub with a bright blue night light. Had the opportunity to take photos of the lobby floor with it’s fine bar & a staircase to the mezzanine. It’s sort of Humphrey Bogart Here’s Looking At You blended with Art Deco intertwined with modern tech. That’s a real phone booth sans phone. Normally it’s Chris the doorman but he was momentarily busy with assisting a family with enough luggage to overwhelm SFO. PERILLA, Vietnamese cuisine. Sounds Spanish but is actually a Vietnamese restaurant housed in the former Just Desserts space. I took out #53, charbroiled beef with Jasmine rice & imperial rolls. AKA Com Cha Gio Bo Nuong. The last two photos are from Google Maps. The rice was prepared with a hint of Jasmine. Thin strips of charbroiled beef succulently marinated were placed next to the equivalent of two large scoops of fluffy rice. Approximately 4-very crispy imperial rolls with a delicious dipping sauce was placed above it. I also purchased another six imperial rolls with a tiny cucumber salad. The Imperial rolls or Cha Gio, are packed with marinated ground pork, taro, carrots & silver noodles all wrapped with an extra crispy shell. VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. Friday evening had a simple dinner of mushroom ravioli in a mushroom broth & a sliver of a chocolate ganache with San Pellegrino Sparkling Water. I found this welcome note from the staff. Months ago I scheduled this stay to include a microwave but it wasn’t available. Wonderful things about the Virgin Group: once you fill out your preferences, they follow you no matter where you go including your nickname. That San Pellegrino Essenza also came from that Virgin Red SMEG mini refrigerator. Today, Saturday, BREAKFAST: I ordered The Full English: country ham, baked beans, Chino Farm Egg. No egg (deadly allergies). What accompanies but is NOT listed are two delicious chicken sausages & 2-half slices of bacon. I ordered an additional 2-3pc bacon sides(3/$5.00 extra crispy & the bacon is nicely chewy), a thick Brioche with I estimate 10pats melted sweet butter. That Brioche toast is nicely toasted, warm, about 3/4-1” thick! The baked beans are in a tomato type sauce inside a thick buttery Texas toast. Also not listed is sautéed mushrooms. The bacon sits atop two stewed baby tomatoes . That and grapefruit & orange juices, San Pellegrino Sparkling water & ahem, 2-salted Virgin Chocolate pieces. The tray comes with full condiments: usual salt/pepper, Heinz Tomato Ketchup & two tiny bottles of Tabasco sauce. It’s breakfast time so they also include tiny jars of Bon Maman Orange Marmalade, Muscat Grape Jelly, Strawberry Preserves. I’m saving the jelly etc to put on pastries & ice cream. Before I explore the hotel I’m sipping a UK product, Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water: tonic water loaded with the fever tree’s quinine from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
