Today I randomly woke up super early, (May have had something to do with the fly that kept dive bombing my face ) which allowed me to start my day with a beautiful yoga session (ok, thanks, fly ). I then did my chores and was done by 8:30am (that’s super early for me, usually I’m done around 10:30am as mornings aren’t usually great for me) helped with finishing up the milking, worked in the garden harvesting food for me (picture in the basket) and food for my rabbits and ducks and chickens (the big arm full). I picked three bushels of white apples that we will make into apple sauce tomorrow, then had some down time, lunch and a nap. Heading back out to make dinner, do chores and have qt with the hubs before bed. One thing that bothers me so much with my mystery illness is being exhausted most of the time and not being able to do mornings at all. It’s that time of year! Canning has begun. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We had a bunch of cucumbers and dill last week, and picked up some garlic from my friend Amanda at @limestoneacresfarm to make dill-icious dill pickles! #ballmason ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I LOVE dill pickles. We will continue to make them in small batches as the cucumbers roll in so we have them throughout the year.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We will also be making dill carrots, (so so good!) and I’ll be making beet chips this week too! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Right now we are making apple sauce from our white apple tree. We had a bizarrely slow start to the growing season… . A bunch of seeds didn’t germinate due to the non-stop cold & rainy days… . And it took an ENTIRE DAY of weeding to catch up from being in Idaho all last week… . But I think we’re mostly back on track. As long as we can continue to dodge the hail and tornadoes, we should be set. (And my yellow rose bush is happier than it’s ever been, so that’s something!)

The chicks are loving their new house! We moved them for the first time last night. Chives are my favorite because: 1. They come back every single year without any help 2. They can handle a relentless pounding by marble-sized hail (ahem) 3. Baked potatoes and fried eggs. Need I say more? 4. They turn vinegar the prettiest shade of pink. . I’m totally obsessed with chive blossom vinegar right now. Google ‘prairie homestead chive vinegar’ to get the recipe and make it before the blossoms go away for the year. You can thank me later.

Why have I stuck with this homesteading thing for so long? No really, sometimes I ask myself that. . After ten years of this lifestyle, it’s definitely far past the point of “shiny object syndrome” or fad-chasing. . The answer might surprise you, especially after I tell you my scandalous little secret… . I like chickens, and canning, and gardening, but those things alone don’t really light me up. (*gasp*) . No, there’s more to it than that. . As a society overall, we’re bored. Disillusioned. Depressed. I see homesteading (or at least the skills that accompany this lifestyle) as part of the solution to these modern issues. THAT is what gets me out of bed in the morning, my friends. . It’s not a coincidence that all things “back to the farm” are trendy right now. I think it’s because we know deep in our consciousness that cooking a meal from scratch, growing a tomato plant, or creating something with our hands isn't an out-of-touch concept to be stuffed in the filing cabinet of nostalgia and the "good ol' days”. . These actions are the very fiber of our human existence and have been for millennia. And they still have full potential to provide humans with deep, rich, satisfaction, even in a day and age of having everything accessible at the push of a button. . I’m not saying everyone has to get a milk cow or move to the middle of nowhere in Wyoming, but I do believe every single human needs at least some of these old-fashioned practices in their everyday, modern life. .
