March is autoimmune awareness month and this my my right here right now. Instagram is a highlight reel. The other day I went for a walk in the park with a friend. The reason I could do this is because I'd taken the day off work. Mental health day I called it. We found a grove of mimosa trees, and my friend took a boomerang of me jumping like a cheerleader in front of them clutching handfuls of freshly cut mimosa (I never leave the house without my secateurs). Laughing at the boomerang I was slightly unnerved at how normal and healthy I looked. Because that's not how I feel. I can't go for a walk in the park after work anymore, I'm too tired and my body hurts. And even if it doesn't I'm scared of pushing myself unless it starts hurting. I'm scared of the pain coming back, and that really impacts the way I'm living my life. So walks in the park, or anywhere, are limited to days off because my job is standing all day behind a counter and my body can't hack it anymore. So after work I'm lying on the couch in front of Netflix. Watching crap to rest my body and to turn off my frustrated mind. Waiting and hoping the new drugs will start working soon and that the side effects won't be worse than the disease. There's always a behind the scenes. Behind the boomerangs. Behind the flowercrowns. But behind this disability there's a happy life loving flower freak waiting for a big comeback. Something I don’t really talk about here is my health. I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hypermobility) and Arthritis in both knees and my right elbow. I’m currently on steroids and Sulfasalazine to control the arthritis, and have to have blood tests every 2 weeks. Honestly at this point I think the doctors have more of my blood than I do. Day to day life is pretty exhausting, and I’m nearly always nauseous due to the medication. I try not to let it affect my regular work, although in the past I’ve had to have months at a time off. Some days though I can barely get out of bed. Luckily my finger joints are still all fully mobile so for now embroidery is fine. Since you all loved my overshare about my dad on insta stories earlier this week (DM’s went offffff), here’s another since it’s World Arthritis Day... . So I had my Rheumatologist appointment yesterday and hmmm I feel lost. . About 3 years ago now... I was bootcamping almost everyday, having the time of my life and BAM. One morning I almost fell out of bed! My knee had seized up. I could barely walk. I saw a GP. She said I’d just been overdoing it Wrong! (Don’t always listen to your doctors!) So I went to see Dr Friis at Brisbane Private. I can’t recommend him enough. Long story short we found I had an autoimmune disease at play and had to refer me on. I ended up in hospital unable to walk let alone work out, so I put on lots of weight from that and all the meds . 2 years on at PA and multiple cortisone injections, they suspected Rheumatoid Arthritis and wanted me to go on #Methotrexate. For those not familiar with this drug, it’s used to treat cancer, ectopic pregnancies and for medical abortions. Uh hell to the no! ‍♀️ U can keep that! My dad has been on it and it made him really sick too. . Moved to Brisbane Northside and got moved to RBH. New drs, new diagnosis. Apparently I have Psoriatic Arthritis... ‍♀️ Nothing else really changes though. (Note. I don’t have Psoriasis - No issues with my skin) But my new dr wants me to go on #Sulfasalazine.... ‍♀️ Look it’s not as epic but still pretty risky. Lots of people are allergic - and get bad complications... it’s an immunosuppressant. Others say it’s changed their life. They feel 100%! So it’s about 50/50. I bought the meds, got interrogated by the pharmacist, cheers biatch and am tossing up whether to start in a week... ‍♀️‍♀️‍♀️ Feeling confused. I’ve seen my dad and his daily morphine & drug salad and I’m not keen. Never believed in all these synthetic drugs. If anyone else can relate, DM me. Let’s chat . So there’s a bit more about me. I've been taking some new drugs for my autoimmune disease for the last 3 weeks and I've really been feeling like shit. So shit that I went to the doctor. I described my symptoms, she shone a torch in my throat and said "of course you feel like shit, you've got the flu. Here's five days of antibiotics and stay in bed for the next few days. You'll be fine." I didn't even realise I had the flu ‍♀️ This is kindof like the time I had a chest xray and got all worried about a strange looking long skinny patch on my lung. Which I asked the Dr about and he peered at me over his spectacles with a concerned look on his face and told me that it was, in fact, my heart. Turned out he was looking at me like that to determine wheather or not I was serious with that question. Anyway it's quite a good thing I'm a florist and not a doctor. On the upside I've had time at home to play with flowers, in my pjs, with hot cups of tea and freshly squeezed orange juice, making whatever the hell I feel like.
