HOUSTON METRO is a network that spans this great city. The cars are sort of similar to Portland OR’s Trimet line in that the KRVs(Light Rail Vehicles) were designed by Siemens. Here in Houston, the METRORail cars have a startup whistling sound similar to San Francisco’s LRV but the similarities end here: whereas San Francisco’s LRVs are noisy all the time, Houston’s aren’t. The stations are the same height as the METRORail cars so even wheelchairs can roll in unlike those of San Francisco’s which have ramps. Portland’s the same, no ramps (from what I observed). The local buses can’t be missed either: they’re colorful green/yellow/orange/blue/black is easy on the eyes. They’re comfortable as well. Many of the streets have cameras which I doubt are for traffic. Bubblecams usually seen in airports, government buildings, banks, etc can be observed here. However baring Big Brother, I’ve found the average Houston police officer to be a friendly, professional & a source of tourist information as well. For some reason, Google GPS/maps doesn’t work here as well nor does the Apple maps. Hence asking the ubiquitous police officer. VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. Friday evening had a simple dinner of mushroom ravioli in a mushroom broth & a sliver of a chocolate ganache with San Pellegrino Sparkling Water. I found this welcome note from the staff. Months ago I scheduled this stay to include a microwave but it wasn’t available. Wonderful things about the Virgin Group: once you fill out your preferences, they follow you no matter where you go including your nickname. That San Pellegrino Essenza also came from that Virgin Red SMEG mini refrigerator. Today, Saturday, BREAKFAST: I ordered The Full English: country ham, baked beans, Chino Farm Egg. No egg (deadly allergies). What accompanies but is NOT listed are two delicious chicken sausages & 2-half slices of bacon. I ordered an additional 2-3pc bacon sides(3/$5.00 extra crispy & the bacon is nicely chewy), a thick Brioche with I estimate 10pats melted sweet butter. That Brioche toast is nicely toasted, warm, about 3/4-1” thick! The baked beans are in a tomato type sauce inside a thick buttery Texas toast. Also not listed is sautéed mushrooms. The bacon sits atop two stewed baby tomatoes . That and grapefruit & orange juices, San Pellegrino Sparkling water & ahem, 2-salted Virgin Chocolate pieces. The tray comes with full condiments: usual salt/pepper, Heinz Tomato Ketchup & two tiny bottles of Tabasco sauce. It’s breakfast time so they also include tiny jars of Bon Maman Orange Marmalade, Muscat Grape Jelly, Strawberry Preserves. I’m saving the jelly etc to put on pastries & ice cream. Before I explore the hotel I’m sipping a UK product, Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water: tonic water loaded with the fever tree’s quinine from the Democratic Republic of Congo. SUNDAY DINNER, VIRGIN HOTEL, 250 4th Street, San Francisco, CA. All my meals is via room service. There appears to be a a limited menu but there isn’t: they hope you go to the restaurant downstairs. You can order via app or through the television app. Being a new hotel, it’s a work in progress. So pick up the telephone , press the red YES button to be connected to the concierge: order from the menu & then ask if certain items are available. Generally they are. Roasted Halibut with greens , with rectangular slices of potato properly toasted & grilled slices of onions. The rest is labeled. Fever-Tree is a UK-based beverage company that uses the best ingredients possible. This ginger beer (ginger soda) is carbonated ginger, it taste crisp & sharp to the palate. A perfect bitters accompaniment to dinner. MENU: Evenings, Fish from the sea. Salad is the vegetable crudité with buttermilk, almond, dill foam. This is the USS STEWART DE238 WWII destroyer escort. These are photos topside & below decks. I actually went back & forth between here & the USS Cavalla because of the heat below decks. They were in the process of welding the topside areas, doing the usual preservation. Much of the paint below decks came off in small pieces due to the humidity & heat when I grasped the railings. The gun mounts were well shielded up to about shoulder height, above that, they’re exposed. Off to visit the Seawolf Park in Galveston (unable to visit the Battleship Texas Monument in La Porte TX due to the massive chemical fires/explosion recently). Visited first, the USS Cavalla, a Gato class submarine that served with distinction in the Pacific theater during WWII. Then off to the USS Stewart, a destroyer escort well armed with three(3”) inch twin gun turrets liberally placed throughout the ship along with machine guns, depth charges. Went inside but couldn’t proceed any further due to the heat inside.
