And so we begin! Here’s the first video of the tops pattern series. In this video, I discuss the key points in a jacket/coat base pattern. . . 1.) The side seams must be mirrored 2.) The back armhole is a maximum of 1/2” or 1.2cm lower than the front armhole. 3.) The back shoulder slope can be slightly curved to allow for more shoulder blade ease (commonly done in couture pieces) 4.) The front armhole is more scooped out than the back (more straight armhole). . . Let’s talk about knit tops and woven tops/blouses We have a little different rules for these when it comes to the base patterns, when we compare them to the jackets in the previous video. . . 1) The side seams are always mirrored 2) On a woven top, the side seam considers the dart when it’s closed 3) On a knit top, the back armhole does not need to be lower than the front. (The stretch in a knit allows for the movement.) 4) On a woven top, the shoulder slope is often less angled in the back to allow for the ease of movement of the shoulder blade. 5) On a woven top, the back armhole does not have to be lower than the front armhole. However, it can be up to about 1/4”. 6) If the back armhole is too low on a blouse/ tight fitted top, it will actually restrict the movement when you reach your arms forward. . . ✂️ Any thoughts or questions? This dress was the reason for my first ever Burda magazine purchase. It was a back issue, I was a noob, just started sewing and still trying to figure out my first Kwik Sew pattern... But I love this pattern so much I decided to buy it anyway. . . Well, 4 years later, I am now ready . Not only did I tackled this origami pattern but I made it in a light silk crepe ...ahhh silk, I love everything about it but sewing it is a real test of one's patience. It's like trying to hold water with your bare hands. . . Pattern: @burda_style #burdamagazine #burda #burdastyle edition 04/2014. . . Fabric: Pure Lux silk crepe in a steel colour, I was lucky enough to pick this piece up from the #melbrestash2019 (if this is your fabric, thank you so much! It's beautiful). There was only 1.8m of it and this pattern called for 2.2m. I omitted the pockets because it would not look very nice in this silk, the fabric is too fine to hold the weights of pockets without causing lots of drag marks. So it worked out really well. . . Modification: I shorten the bodice by 1", I didn't include a hem allowance and sew an extra wide hem so the skirt sits above my knee instead of well below it. I also made this one size smaller than suggested and left the zip out. Since this silk crepe is stretchy and the dress is actually fitted only at the shoulders there was no need for a zip. . .
