I started making this dress as ‘something to wear to work tomorrow’ but it actually turned out much better and much more exciting then expected! It’s another super-hacked #athinatop - with short sleeves, upturned sleeve hems and A-line skirt section. I also added a double sash belt. The fabric is a very crisp cotton, with smooth silky feel and a bit of structure - I bought it during my recent Belgrade trip. The only thing I would change are the in-seam pockets - I should have used plain black fabric for an added interest, but I’m not bothered enough to unpick it and do it again, so maybe next time... Another day another wiksten shift! I was really feeling the itch to stitch over the long weekend and knowing that the wiksten shift is a nice quick project, I busted out this linen/rayon from my stash and it came together over the course of a couple nights. This one is a size 8, and it fits best out of the three I’ve made. Skipped the pockets altogether, and while I miss the practicality of having somewhere to stash my phone, I think it looks a nicer without. I’ve been doing more pleated skirts lately, so I’ve been on the lookout for shortcuts. This may or may not be faster than calculating ahead of time, but I find it much less anxiety-inducing: for knife pleats, I choose a fabric that has a stripe or small regular pattern, so I can use the fabric to guide the pleats rather than a ruler. I pleat it up, pin it, and measure it. If it’s longer than my waist (which it always is) I divide the excess by the number of pleats and just move each pleat over by that amount. This one had 29 pleats and was 4.5” too long, so I moved each top fold over by 1/8” or so to eat up those extra inches. I’ve been really into lined invisible zips for a while now. If your bodice and lining are the same piece, the secret is to trim a half inch from the center back edge of each lining piece. Stitch the center back edges of both lining and bodice to the zipper, pull gently on the lining to flip the zipper teeth toward center back, and stitch the top edges together. Voila! Fabric fabrication. This top is made with cashmere and silk slitter tape from @makerandproducer. It came in a strip about 10cm wide, wound into a ball. It's the slice of fabric they take off when they're making scarves at a local cashmere mill. I ironed out the strips, overlaid them and stitched them together, then highlighted some of the dark areas in red thread. It feels amazing, and with the amount of detail in the fabric I wanted a simple shape of top. I love how organic the fabric looks, and the fact that it's made from mill surplus that would otherwise go to waste. Photos showing the ball of tape and some cut into strips, ironing the strips out, and fabric washed to get rid of the quilting glue I used to place the pieces together for sewing. Also another pair of midge repeller woven joggers made for camping this weekend, in stretch linen, elasticated at the outside of the ankle cuff only, and a welt pocket at the back for my phone because welts are one of my favourite things to do right now. A wee bit of precision sewing. . I have lots more fabric from maker and producer, it's a great initiative and if you can get along to one of the open days in Glasgow you won't be disappointed. Oh, just sitting here looking at the Palais de Papes in Avignon while my kids play on an amazing playground in its shade. Finn is feeling better today, but we're going to take it somewhat easy and be back at the campground by afternoon. Wearing my #hinterlanddress (tutorial for V-neck hack is on my website.) This is my most-worn item on this trip. I believe I've worn it several times a week, sometimes on its own or under my lace cardigan, sometimes under my Strata tops. A real workhorse of a piece of clothing, and I love the easy elegance I feel when I put it on. #hinterlandhackathon
