HOUSTON METRO is a network that spans this great city. The cars are sort of similar to Portland OR’s Trimet line in that the KRVs(Light Rail Vehicles) were designed by Siemens. Here in Houston, the METRORail cars have a startup whistling sound similar to San Francisco’s LRV but the similarities end here: whereas San Francisco’s LRVs are noisy all the time, Houston’s aren’t. The stations are the same height as the METRORail cars so even wheelchairs can roll in unlike those of San Francisco’s which have ramps. Portland’s the same, no ramps (from what I observed). The local buses can’t be missed either: they’re colorful green/yellow/orange/blue/black is easy on the eyes. They’re comfortable as well. Many of the streets have cameras which I doubt are for traffic. Bubblecams usually seen in airports, government buildings, banks, etc can be observed here. However baring Big Brother, I’ve found the average Houston police officer to be a friendly, professional & a source of tourist information as well. For some reason, Google GPS/maps doesn’t work here as well nor does the Apple maps. Hence asking the ubiquitous police officer. Houston or not, I enjoy observation decks AND glass walled elevators, especially those that ride outside buildings. This greenery area is at the One Allen Center whose building is interconnected to others through overpasses or “skytunnels”. I went to visit a good friend of mine at UTMB, the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. There’s two arms of the University of Texas: Texas A&M, the engineering campus & UTMB, a series of medical campuses. This is Ghannam Al-Dossari MD, the chief of cardiac surgery including heart transplants. Formerly at UCSF, he was one of two leading cardiac surgeons who specialized in TAVR procedures. He’s standing in front of the original medical building, a beautiful structure that they continue to use to this day. We took a walk to the upper floor to the auditorium, where students & guests surround the lecturers. These are photos of the other buildings on campus here at UTMB Galveston TX. Many buildings are named after the Sealey Family: donors & far sighted thinkers who helped to propel UTMB into a world class medical institution. Here, is DrAl-Dossari demonstrating the flexibility of the average ICU. Whereas many medical centers have specialty ICUs: cardiac, general surgery, transplant, pediatric, neonate, spine. Here at UTMB, almost every room is similarly equipped, hence any room can quickly be converted into an ICU room anywhere in the building or at the other medical complexes on campus. Similarly on the outside of each room is a workstation manned by a nurse who has access to both rooms. Additional staffing is drawn from ICU float nurses & float pools. Each room has a sofa that can be converted into a comfortable bed for family members. Each room has the standard ceiling lift, a bathroom the size of hotel suite (re:large), a locked refrigerator also. Well, I do eat & strangely enough even though BBQ was my primary meal, I still eat balanced meals. There’s Snap Kitchen, essentially an organic or healthy pre-prepared food station, a chain throughout Houston. I returned to UTMB @ Galveston to walk through the large campus. They’ve shuttles but preferred to walk, good exercise. Shriners Hospital is also on the same campus, it’s a regional burn center for children. Fountains can be observed by the main garage & throughout the UTMB complex. There are numerous plazas with plentiful seating. Off to visit the Seawolf Park in Galveston (unable to visit the Battleship Texas Monument in La Porte TX due to the massive chemical fires/explosion recently). Visited first, the USS Cavalla, a Gato class submarine that served with distinction in the Pacific theater during WWII. Then off to the USS Stewart, a destroyer escort well armed with three(3”) inch twin gun turrets liberally placed throughout the ship along with machine guns, depth charges. Went inside but couldn’t proceed any further due to the heat inside.
