Not every disability is visible . I love this campaign from @crohnsandcolitisuk about IBD awareness. The power of an invisible illness is the ability to look good on the outside, despite the pain and dis-ease you may be experiencing on the inside. We are often unaware of what battles others are going through, unless they choose to share this information. . This illustration is a snapshot of my years with Ulcerative Colitis. IBD gave me resilience. I showed up at work everyday as a graphic designer, despite my exhaustion and daily pain levels. I‘d watch the bathroom door like a hawk, knowing I could need it at any time. Toilet anxiety is real . I spent hours at the hospital getting infusions: Infliximab (Remicade), Entyvio or iron. I was often told by nurses I looked too good/healthy to be there. That was thanks to make up, a positive attitude and the fact UC is mainly an invisible illness. . If you don’t talk about your IBD, people wouldn’t know that you have it. I always shared my IBD experiences not to get pity or sympathy, but to help others understand what I was going though. The best part about IBD is knowing there’s so much support if you need it - you don’t have to battle IBD alone. . . . just one of those moments of why me?... I have days where I am completely thankful for my stoma and the new lease of life it’s given me and I have days where I really just think why? Why did this happen to me? What did I do to deserve this? Why can’t I look like all the other girls I see? Why can’t I have a normal body? Will I ever not have fatigue? Today is one of those days.. I feel sad and lost and I rarely talk about how I feel when I feel this way. I try and stay positive and happy about how great things are now but right now I’m just mourning my old body and being able to not have to think about my bowels. #fedup

I asked her if she was sure, because I was still trying to find the courage myself to look at my “new” stomach. . I pulled up my shirt to show my midline scar still bandaged up with my clear ostomy bag. Her instant reaction: “We have to name it!”. I was shocked by her reaction, totally expecting her to look away with disgust. Instead, she declared my stoma’s name to be Leroy. . Here I am, 10 years later, so very thankful that my friend made what I thought to be an embarrassing situation, a totally normal one. Simply by naming my stoma, she made it clear to me that she did not care that I had an ostomy. . To this day, I follow her care-free attitude towards my stoma and share openly about it to everyone I meet.” -Maggie Baldwin . The face of a gal whose dermatologist just told her that her #pyoderma is fully inactive!!!! Yay!!!! . After a few months of #humira injections my PeskyPyoderma™️ has finally gone quiet. Words can’t describe how happy I am to know that I quite possibly am rid of this thing! The marks are still there, but at least the active infection is gone Hopefully I will be able to say goodbye to the humira as well. My legs will be so thankful for that. .
